3.2 Chemical Analysis (Loss on Ignition)

Loss in Ignition is the loss of weight due to release of volatiles

on ignition. A sample is ignited in a furnace under controlled conditions
and the weight loss is measured. This applies to pozzolanas which have
to be calcined for use.

Physical Analysis of Treated Powdered Coconut Fiber

The Physical characteristic to be determine in powdered coconut

fiber is the bulk density and particle size other physical properties are
shown in the related literature. The methods that will be used for the
determination of density will be the same except for the screen mesh
used for particle size determination. For the powdered coconut fiber, the
particle that will pass the screen mesh no.70 will be used as an
admixture.

3.4.1 Compressive test

The preparation of the sample material was carried out
under laboratory conditions using procedures outlined by ASTM
C109/C109M. The objective was to evaluate the effect of the
pozzolanic material, as substituted for Portland cement, and the
addition of treated powdered coconut fiber on the compressive
strength of concrete. The results will be presented as a
comparison between the control specimen compressive strength
and the strength of the test specimens by percent of pozzolan
used at 7 and 28 days of curing time.
• The test specimens (50 x 50 x 50 mm prisms) will be molded
from a control mixture and the test mixtures in accordance
with ASTM C109/C109M.
• The test mixtures used admixtures to replace 20, 30, 40 and
50% of the mass of the Portland cement used in the control
mixture.
• The proportion of materials for standard mortar is one part of
cement to 2.75 parts of graded standard sand by weight
(1:2.75).
• The water cement ratio that will be used for this study is 0.5.

The control mixture is consisted of:

 88.33 g of Portland cement
 229.17 g of graded standard sand
 249.50 ml of water

The purpose of this testing is to analyze the strength activity index for
concrete samples blended with pozzolan. Test specimens from a control
mixture and a test mixture were molded in accordance with ASTM
C109/C109M. In the test mixture, 20% of the mass of Portland cement used
in the control mixture was replaced by the same mass of the test pozzolan.
Test cube batches were produced in accordance with ASTM C311, Standard
Test Methods for Sampling and Testing Fly Ash or Natural Pozzolans for Use
in Portland-Cement Concrete.
Test Mixtures:
Control mixture:
•70.66 g of Portland cement
•88.33 g of Portland cement
•17.67 of test sample (pozzolan)
•229.17 g of graded standard sand
•229.17 g of graded standard sand
•249.50 ml of water
•249.50 ml of water
After molding, the specimens were placed in a moist room at
23.0°C for 24 hours, and then removed from the moist room and stored in
saturated lime water as specified in ASTM C109/C109M, and the
compressive strength was determined for two specimens of the control
mixture and two specimens of the test mixtures at curing durations of 7
and 28 days.

The pozzolanic activity index was calculated as follows:

Where:
A= average compressive strength of test mixtures cubes.
B= average compressive strength of control mix cubes.

The minimum ASTM C618 requirement for strength activity index is

75% at 7 and 28 days, and this specification states that “meeting the 7
days or 28 days strength activity index will indicate specifications
compliance.”
 The data that will be collected after the
testings and experiment will be analyzed
using the formulas and techniques provided
by the ASTM C-109/C- 109M. The figures
that will be shown below are the sample
tabulation for the statistical treatment of`
data.
