Eating can be a deep meditation

Every minute of eating breakfast, lunch or dinner,

or even just a snack, can become a minute of joy
and happiness
During the time of practicing mindful eating
we focus our attention on only two things

First of all, we’re aware of the food that we serve ourselves to eat. We breathe
in and out and become aware of the vegetables, of the rice, or whatever we are
eating.
Next, put the food into your mouth mindfully. Do not put anything else into
your mouth, like your worries or your projects.
Enjoy eating each morsel of our meal with a
clear mind in that way, with
• THANKS
• JOY
• GRATITUDE

IN OUR HEART
We can eat mindfully with our colleagues, in the classroom with our students or at home with our
family.
When we eat together, we generate the energy of mindfulness and joy so that we will be nourished
not only by the food, but also by the collective energy of brotherhood, sisterhood, peace and joy.

Eating together mindfully

can be nourishing for
the body and for the spirit
at the same time
Your health depends very much on
what you eat
Let us eat in such a way that
can preserve compassion in
our heart, that helps living
beings to suffer less, and that
helps to protect our precious
planet.
The Verses
This food is the
gift of the whole
universe:
the earth, the
sky, the rain and
the sun.
We eat in a way that
nurtures our compassion,
protects other species
and the environment, and
heals and preserves our
precious planet
We eat this food to be healthy and happy and to love
each other as a family
Why practice mindful eating?
• To become more mindful of the process of eating – slowing down, savoring
and enjoying, and eating a sensible quantity of food chosen mindfully with
thought and care.
• To develop awareness of our own habit energies around food, eating and
consumption.
• To develop a sense of gratitude through awareness of the connection
between the food on our plate and the processes and people that brought it
to us.
Mindful eating can transform eating activity to
become a source of deep pleasure and connection with
others.
Learning to eat mindfully has a wide range of
benefits,
helping us develop our mindfulness and
compassion,
enjoy our food,
improve our own physical and mental health
and
feel more in control of our lives.
The steps of MINDFUL EATING

• Preparation (of the food, mindfully)

• Arriving (in the present moment, e.g. breath, bell)
• Looking deeply (gratitude)
• Intention (to eat mindfully)
• Choosing
• Seeing (textures, color, shape)
• Smelling
• Placing (in the mouth)
• Savoring (chewing, tasting, swallowing)
• Fullness (how the food feels in the belly)
As educators with responsibility for making policy and
shaping the school, mindful eating can help us become
more motivated to try to ensure the school have policies
and practices around food and nutrition that promote the
health and well-being of all who work and learn there.
