WHAT DOES THE GOVT WANT FROM RIM?

BlackBerry
Enterprise
Server
WHY ?
o NATIONAL SECURITY :
The government is worried that
militants could use BlackBerry's heavily
encrypted services to plan attacks.
o
o Supervision:
To ensure that they can monitor
electronic messages at all times for
security reasons.
WHAT THE GOVT IS
SAYING…
"We are very clear that any BlackBerry service that
cannot be fully intercepted by our agencies must be
discontinued. Offering access to data is part of the
telecom licensing guidelines and has to be adhered
to.”

“The government
imposed a deadline of August 31 asking
RIM to either provide a solution for
monitoring encrypted data or shut shop” .
What RIM is saying…

 `Encryption' is a  It is impossible for it

THE GOVT’S
DEMANDS
• Indian government rejected all these
proposals and asked RIM to install a SERVER
in India for real time information rather than
a deferred one in the interest of national
SECURITY

• “The Ministry has made it clear that any
communication through the telecom
networks should be accessible to the law
enforcement agencies and all telecom
service providers including third-parties
have to comply with this.

RIM’S Solution
 ‘Metadata’
• is a summary of data attributes,
 it shows how long a text document is, who the author is,
and when the document was written. It also shows
picture size, color, depth, and when the image was
made.
 It would provide information on the phones’
identification and the Blackberry server’s Internet
address.
 RIM provided solutions for local security agencies to
monitor the company's BlackBerry corporate email
service. RIM had already provided access to other
services such as messenger and chat.
 RIM has prosed that an industry forum be established to
help governments manage lawful intercept, in the hope
of forestalling India's threatened ban.
