It is the form of a word which cannot be further
analyzed without total loss of identity.
It is that part of the word left when all the
affixes are removed
Knowingly, brainlessness, ministerialy,
untained, actions, paranormality, unreheated,
rediscover, insufferable, disinherited.
AFFIXES = bound morphemes which attach to
a base (root or stem).
Depending on the position where the affixes
are attached, there are three kinds of affix:
1. Prefix --- in front of the base
2. Suffix --- in the back of the base
3. Infix --- in the middle of the base
4. Circumfix--- affix which spans a base
Depending on the function, there are two kinds
of AFFIX:
1. Grammatical/Inflectional Affix
• Change no part of speech
• Distinguish the various words-form within lexeme
2. Lexical/Derivational Affix
• Change part of speech.
• Create the new lexeme.
A stem is that part of word to which
grammatical/inflectional affixes are added.
Any base to which a grammatical affix may be
added.
Examples:
1. Cats : cat (free morpheme) + -s
2. Inventions : invention + -s
 Housewives
 Consultants
 Unbuckles
 Organizations
 Supervisors
 Swimmers
Every form to which an affix can be added.
Every Stem is thus a Base.
