What are Micro turbines?
Micro turbines are small combustion
turbines with outputs of 25 kW to 500
kW.
They evolved from automotive and
truck turbochargers, auxiliary power
units (APUs) for airplanes, and small
jet engines.
They are a type of combustion
turbine that produces both heat and
electricity on a relatively small scale.
History of Microturbines
Since 1970s, Automotive industry viewed the possibility of using the
microturbines to replace traditional reciprocating piston engines.
In 1978, Allison began a project aimed at the development and construction of
generating groups for military applications, driven by small gas turbines.
Companies of US , England & Sweden have recently introduced in the world
Market commercial units of microturbines.
Among these companies are: Capstone, Browman power and ABB Distributed
Generation & Volvo Aero Corporation.
When Micro turbines come into the picture?

Demand of alternate energy sources.

Need of energy in Remote locations.
Need of compact & portable power generator.
Better efficiency & require infrequent maintenance.
Need of clean energy generating device.
Components of Micro turbine
 Turbo-Compressor package
 Generator
 Recuperator (Heat Exchanger)
 Air Bearings
Basic Principle of Microturbines
Advantages and Challenges
Advantages:- Challenges: -
 Small number of moving parts.  Low fuel to electricity efficiency.
 Compact size.  Loss of power output and
 Light weight. efficiency with higher ambient
temperature and elevation.
 Good efficiency in cogeneration.  Design of air bearings
 Low emission.  Cooling problems
 Can utilize waste fuel.
 Long maintenance intervals
 Less noise than reciprocating
engines
 Less vibration
Applications
 Small scale power generation
 A textile mill ensures continuous
operation by getting its power from
micro turbines
 In automotive companies are
interested in micro turbines as a light
weight fossil fuel based energy hybrid
electric vehicles especially buses
In Automobiles(turbocharger)
Future Scope
Development is ongoing in a
variety of areas:
 Heat recovery/core generation
 Fuel flexibility
 Vehicles
 Hybrid systems (e.g. fuel
cell/Microturbine,
flywheel/Microturbine)
CONCLUSION
 Micro turbine can use low grade of fuel very effectively like waste gases, sour
gases etc.
 Thus, micro turbine gives chance of low fuel cost and less emission.
 The dimensions of micro turbine comparatively small by which it can be installed
at field where power is consumed.
 In India the micro turbine is quite useful. The power shortage effect can be
solved using micro turbine, using fuels like biogas, etc.
 India the technology is still underdevelopment so the present seminar is an
honest attempt to introduce micro turbine technology in India for solving the
problem of power generation in future.
