Pharyngitis is defined as
an infection or irritation
of the pharynx or
tonsils . The etiology is
usually infectious, with
most cases being of viral
origin and most bacterial
cases attributable to
group A streptococci

Pathophysiology
Several viruses can cause viral pharyngitis:influenza,herpes
simplex,adenoviruses,rhinoviruses,coxsackieviruses,Epstein-Barr
virus.

Soreness might persist for a long time after the physical signs
have subsided

e-hemolytic streptococci:The commonest infecting organisms
Neisseria species
Symptom and sign
• sore throat
• frequently referred otalgia
• fever
• odynophagia
• jugular lymphadenopathy
• polymorphonuclear leukocytosis
• hyperemia(pharyngeal mucosa)---red and
swollen(pharyngeal tonsils)---yellow patches appear
on the crypts
