TOPIC 1: NATURE OF INQUIRY AND
RESEARCH
• Research is a systematic process of solving a
problem or finding answers to an inquiry.
• It is an organized method of finding relatively
new ideas from the existing body of
knowledge with the help of useful tool for the
purpose of improving the quality of life.
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

A systematic and organized investigation to

seek solutions to problems by obtaining
NUMERICAL DATA and testing the
relationships of variables using statistical
techniques.
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

According to Aliaga and Gunderson (2000),

Quantitative research is explaining a
phenomenon by collecting numerical data
that are analyzed using mathematically
based methods (in particular statistics).
PHENOMENON
A peculiar incident that can happen
anywhere, with any discipline or in
any organization.
Examples:
Increase in sales
Change in drop-out rates
Decrease in the number of failing students
in mathematics
Shift in the percentage of dengue patients
QUANTITATIVE VS. QUALITATIVE
Historically, there are 2 distinct and traditional ways of
approaching the inquiry process- the qualitative and
quantitative research approaches.

Both qualitative and quantitative research methods have their own

characteristics. No single research approach can be considered as
the best one. Qualitative, Quantitative or mix of both approaches
can be employed depending on one’s research goal and purpose.
CHARACTERISTICS OF QUANTITATIVE
1.Reliable and objective;
2.Uses statistics to generalize
findings;
3. It looks at the connections
between variables and
establishes cause and effect
relationships in highly
controlled circumstances.
CHARACTERISTICS OF QUANTITATIVE
4. It tests theories or
hypotheses.
5. It assumes that the
sample is representative of
the population.
ADVANTAGES OF QUANTITATIVE
RESEARCH

1. Allows the researcher to measure

and analyze data;
2. Gives reliable results since the
study uses big samples;
3. Replicable since standards are
usually used in choosing the
instruments, sampling procedures
and statistical treatments.
ADVANTAGES OF QUANTITATIVE
RESEARCH

4. Personal biases can be avoided

since personal interaction is not
part of the research process.
5. Results can be reduced through
statistical treatments and
interpreted in a few statements.
DISADVANTAGES OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
1. It ignores the context of the study in such a
way that it does not consider the natural
setting of the conducted study;
2. It requires more resources since it uses a
large sample for the study;
3. The results are limited because they are
usually based on the analysis of numbers
and are not obtained from detailed
narratives.
DISADVANTAGES OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
4. It provides less elaborate accounts of
human perceptions.
5. Preset or fixed alternative answers may
not necessarily reflect the true answers of
the participants.
IMPORTANCE OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

In Education:
It can be used in measuring the
level of performance of students
and teachers, and in assessing
the effectiveness of the methods
and the different programs
conducted.
IMPORTANCE OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
In Medical and Health Allied Services:
It yields statistics that can help
improve the rate of recovery of
patients with illnesses and
sicknesses, and the efficacy of
medicines and drugs among
others.
IMPORTANCE OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

It can lead to a more responsible

and accountable operation of the
different components of
technology.
