WIND SYSTEMS IN THE
PHILIPPINES

The Philippines experiences three major wind systems during

the year. These systems affect the weather.
1. NORTHEAST MONSOON (October – March)
– The northeast monsoon occurs during the cold months
between October to March.
– Cold winds from the north , known as northeasterly winds,
swift across the Philippines.
– The maximum intensity of these winds is felt around January to
part of February.
– January and February are generally the coldest months in the
Philippines.

2. TRADE WINDS (February – May)

– Winds coming from the east hits the Philippines during the
month of February until part of May.
– These winds come from high-pressure areas in the Pacific
Ocean. The winds are therefore warmer.
– These months are noted for warm and dry weather.

3. SOUTHWEST MONSOON (May – October)

– Around the months of May to October, a flow of moist southwest
winds swift across the Philippines. This moist air causes rain.
– Generally, the rainy season in the Philippines occurs from May to
October.
– This southwest monsoon comes from the equator, therefore
warm and moist due to water evaporated by the Pacific Ocean.
– Maximum rain-showers usually occur during the month of August.
PREVAILING WINDS

– Prevailing winds are winds that blow from a single direction

over a specific area of the Earth.

QUESTION: Why does the
Administration building get to enjoy
the benefits of the prevailing wind?
And the Architecture Building doesn’t?
REASONS (Administration Building):
1. It is properly located and oriented. It is located at
a high part of the site.
2. It has the highest building height to serve its
functions.
3. There is no blockage of the prevailing wind such
as trees and existing building.
4. Therefore, it is directly hit by the winds.

REASONS (Architecture Building):
1. The prevailing wind (southwest monsoon) is
blocked by the trees on the shore and the rising

During Northeast Monsoon and Trade Winds
1. It is located at a low part on the contour of the
land.
2. Existing buildings (such as the Electrical Building
and CHMT) and trees are blocking the wind path.
