NATIONAL ASSESSMENT

AND ACCREDITATION
COUNCIL ( NAAC )
 NAAC is an autonomous body
established by the UGC in 1994 with its
head quarters at Bangalore to assess and
accredit institutions of higher education in
the country

It is an outcome of the


recommendations of the National Policy
in Education (1986)
NAAC stands for promoting
following core values among higher
education institutions of the
country:

a) Contribution to National
Development
b) Fostering global competencies
among students
c) Inculcating a value system in
students
d) Promoting the use of technology
e) Quest for excellence
OBJECTIVES OF NAAC

 To assess and accredit (certify) institutions of higher


learning with an objective of continuous improvement
in the quality of education

To stimulate the academic environment for


promotion of quality of teaching – learning and
research in higher education institutions

 To encourage self evaluation, accountability,


autonomy and innovations in higher education

INSTITUTIONAL
ACCREDITATION
 Accreditation helps the institution to know its
strengths, weaknesses and opportunities through
an informed review process.

 It will help to identify internal areas of


planning and resource allocation

 Accreditation enhances collegiality on the


campus

 Certification provides funding agencies


objectives data for performance funding
 It initiates institutions into innovative and
modern methods of pedagogy

 It gives institutions a new sense of direction


and identity

 It provides society with reliable information


on quality of education offered

 Accreditation promotes intra and inter-


institutional interactions
FUNCTIONS OF NAAC
 Devise and establish mechanism for periodic
assessment of and accreditation of institutions of
higher learning

 Assess the quality of institutions of higher


education that volunteer for the process, through
an internationally accepted methodology

 Accredit institutions of higher learning and


specific academic programmes
 Set rating parameter and criteria for certifying
and grading higher education institutions and
educational programmes

 Develop an information data base in higher


education to keep abreast with the latest
development in the area of higher education,
particularly in the area of assessment and
accreditation

 Recommend norms to be followed for quality


improvement in teaching and research in higher
education
