MECHANISMS
Neurotic anxiety are vague
feelings of anxiety sparked
by the sensation that
unacceptable unconscious
thoughts are about to burst
through the awareness
barrier and express
themselves in consciousness.
The ego has many techniques
at its disposal to deal with
unwanted thoughts and
desires. These are known
collectively as defense
mechanisms.

1. Repression or
unintentional forgetting
2. Sublimation or redirecting
unconscious impulses into
socially acceptable actions
3. Displacement or
channeling our impulses
to nonthreatening objects
4. Denial or refuse to accept
that certain facts exist
5. Reaction formation or
reversing the feelings
6. Intellectualization or
considering something in
a strictly intellectual,
unemotional manner
7. Projection or attributing an
unconscious impulse to
other people instead of to
ourselves
8. Humor or focusing on
funny aspects of a painful
situation
9.Altruism or handling pain
by helping others
10. Isolation
11. Regression or acting
childish
12. Identification or feeling
connected to others
13. Rationalization or
justifying one’s behavior
14. Undoing or trying to
reverse or “undo”
