THE INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT)
• The Internet of Things (IoT) is the ever-growing network of physical
objects that feature an IP address for internet connectivity, and the
communication that occurs between these objects and other
Internet-enabled devices and systems.

• Internet of Things (IoT) in simple words, is an ecosystem of

connected physical objects that are accessible through the internet

• Also known as Machine-to-Machine (M2M), Skynet or Internet of

Everything.

EVOLUTION OF IOT
HOW IOT WORKS?
• The Internet of Things (IoT), also known as the Internet of Everything (IoE),
includes all the web-enabled devices that collect, send and act upon data
they acquire from their surroundings using embedded sensors, processors
and communication hardware.

• These devices, often called "connected" or "smart" devices, can sometimes

talk to other related devices, this process is called machine-to-machine
(M2M) communication, and acts on information they get from one another.

• Humans can interact with devices to set them up, give them instructions or
access the data, but devices do most of the work on their own without
human intervention. Their existence has been made possible by all tiny
mobile components that are available nowdays, as well as the always-
online nature of home and business networks.

THE STRUCTURE OF IOT
The IoT is a huge network consisting of networks of devices and computers connected

through a series of intermediate technologie. Many technologies like RFIDs and wireless

connections may act as enablers of this connectivity.

• Tagging Things : Real-time item traceability and addressability by RFIDs.

• Feeling Things : Sensors act as primary devices to collect info. from the environment.

• Shrinking Things : Miniaturization and Nanotechnology has enabled the ability of

smaller things to interact and connect within the “things” or “smart devices.”

• Thinking Things : Embedded intelligence in devices through sensors has formed the

network connection to the Internet. It can make the “things” realizing the intelligent

control.

ADVANTAGES OF IOT
The time has come when you are out and your computers at home contact
you to let you know that your medicines have expired or that the milk has
been finished or you need more fruits or vegetables. This isn’t just a fantasy
now but a reality due to the amazing possibilities of the Internet of Things
(IoT).

1. DATA:
More the information, the easier it is to make a right decision. Knowing
what to get from the grocery, without having to check on your own, not
only saves time but it is convenient as well.
2. TRACKING
The computers keep a track on the quality and the viability
of things at home. Knowing expiration date of products
before one consumes them improves both safety and
quality of life. Also, one will never run out of anything when
you need it during the last moment.
3. TIME
The amount of time saved in monitoring, tracking and the
number of trips done in the absence of internet of things would
be tremendous.

4. MONEY

The financial aspect is best advantage. This technology could

replace humans who are incharge of monitoring and maintaining
supplies.
DISADVANTAGES

1. COMPATIBILITY:
As of now, there is no standard for tagging and monitoring with the
sensors. A uniform concept like the USB or Bluetooth will be required
which should not be that difficult to do.

2. PRIVACY/SECURITY:
Privacy is a big issue with IoT. All data must be encrypted so that data
about anyone’s financial status or how much milk they consume isn’t
common knowledge at work place or with acquaintances.
3. COMPLEXITY:
There are several opportunities for failure due to complex systems. For
example, both you and your spouse might receive messages that the
milk is over and both of you end up buying the same. That leaves you
with double the quantity required. Or there could be a software bug
causing printer to order ink multiple times when it requires a single
cartridge.

4. SAFETY

There is a possibility that the software can be hacked and your personal
information misused. These possibilities are endless. Your prescription
being changed or your account details being hacked can put you at risk.
Hence, all the safety become the consumer’s responsibility.
CONCLUSION
Projections for the impact of IoT on Internet and economy are
impressive, with some anticipating as many as 150 billion
connected IoT devices and global economic impact of more than
$11 trillion by 2025. The potential economic impact of IoT is
huge, but the journey to its adoption is not a seamless one. There
are many challenges that are faced by companies looking to
implement IoT solutions. However, risks and disadvantages
associated with IoT can be resolved.
