SOUTH CHINA SEA BASINAL AREA

The South China Sea basinal area consists of two

distinct basins of different types: West Natuna Basin
and East Natuna Basin

•The West Natuna basin is the southern end of the

NW-SE trending Malay rift basin system

•The East Natuna Basin is a passive margin basin of

the northern edge of the Sundaland, related to
the rifting and opening of the NNE-SSW trending
South China Sea oceanic basin

WEST NATUNA BASINAL AREA

•The West Natuna basinal area is located in the intersection between

the Malay rift-basin system and the southwestern extension of the
South China Sea rifting and opening of the oceanic crust.

• Several rift-valley basins were formed in the Paleogene trending

mainly in NE-SW direction.

• These rift valley basins did not evolve into other basin types, was
followed by general sagging resulting into a steerhorn shaped
basins.

• The West Natuna basins are typically involved with inversion

providing structural traps.

EAST NATUNA BASIN

• The East Natuna basin/Sarawak basin is distinct from West Natuna basin separated
by the Natuna-Anambas Arch and Lupar Fault

• The East Natuna Basin can be considered as a passive margin basin overlying a thin
continental crust as the result of stretching related to the rifting and opening of the
South China Sea

• During the Miocene this margin developed into a carbonate shelf, and off-shelf
carbonate platforms on remnants of the horst structure

• The basin extends to the east into the Sarawak basin off western Borneo.

• Unlike the West Natuna basin, it was not subjected to a major phase of Miocene
inversion and is, therefore, structurally quite different.

• The East Natuna basin is well known as being the host for the largest gas field in SE
Asia, the Natuna D-Alpha gas field, with 210TCFG
