Jackfruit
Artocarpos heterophyllus

The jackfruit (Artocarpos
heterophyllus), also known as jack
tree, fenne , jakfruit, of sometimes
simply jack is a species of tree in
the fig , mulberry , and breadfruit
family (Moraceae) native to south
india.
Cultural Practices

Nursery management
Land preparation
Intercropping
Fertilizing
Pruning
Pest and diseases management
Harvesting
Propagation

Jackfruit is usually propagated by
seeds or by asexual propagation.
Farmers who propagate by seeds
should select healthy, vigorous,
and disease-resistant seeds from
productive mother trees.
Propagation

Asexual propagation can be done
by inarching or grafting. Among
the grafting methods, cleft grafting
appears to be the most effective as
it is able to counter the devastating
effects of a typhoon which usually
destroys tall trees.
Propagation

A cleft grafted tree is high
in genetic quality, grows
short but strong in stature.
Its branches tend to spread
sideward.
GROWTH
DEVELOPMENT

Jackfruit is rapid grower, reaching a
height of 3 meter (10 ft.) and canopy
diameter of 2 meter (6.6 ft.) in 2 years.
Height growth for the first few years is
about 1.5 m per year (5 ft. per year),
slowing to 36 to 60 cm per year (14-18
in/year).
GROWTH
DEVELOPMENT

At 20 year old tree can reach 17.5 metre
(57 ft.) in height and 20 cm (8 inches) in
trunk diameter. While trees can live to
100 years of age, their removal and
replacement in Thailand plantations
after 20 years of growth suggest a
significant decrease in productivity in
age.
Varieties

There are several varieties that are
grown in the Philippines. The most
important are the Sinaba and the
Tinumbaga.
Sinaba has thick flesh and small seeds,
with good eating quality.
Tinumbaga has thinner flesh and
stronger aroma, with sweeter taste.
Variety

Other varieties are called AES
jak #1, AES jak #2, AES jak #3,
ACC and #4, burabod. These
varieties have average fruit
weights ranging from 5.2 to
12.3 kg. (AFIS,n.d.)
Fertilizer and Manuring

A consistent, well-balanced manurial
programme is important so as to
stimulate rapid growth in young trees
and to ensure maximum yield when the
plants come into bearing.
Grows in freely drainage, acid to
neutral soils.
Fertilizer and Manuring

As nitrogen, phosphate and potash
play vital role in the plant metabolism,
and markedly affect fruit production, a
balanced supply of these nutrients in
the fertilizer mixture must be applied to
the plant.
Planting

The place chosen for the planting
should be first cleared from old
tree stumps and roots to avoid
termites and root disease. When
necessary, the soil should be
ploughed first, then rows are made
to mark the planting intervals.
Planting

 A spacing of 12x12 m between plant
and rows maybe given for both direct
seeded and transplant seedlings of
jackfruit trees in fertile soil
10x10 m spacing in poor soil.
Temperature

Mean annual temperature 24 – 28
degree Celsius (75 – 82 degree F).
Mean maximum temperature of hottest
month 32 – 35 degree Celsius (90 – 95
degree F).
Mean minimum temperature of coldest
month 16 – 20 degree Celsius (61 – 68
degree F)
Planting Materials

Grafted seedlings
Machineries for land preparation
Organic fertilizer
Yield and Harvesting

Fruit mature in 6 to 8 month
after flowering. Depending on
rainfall, irrigation and tree age,
jackfruit can produce from 200
– 250 fruit per year, sometimes
up to 500 fruits on growth trees.
Yield and Harvesting

Average yield of jackfruit
is about 70- 100 kg per
tree per in Malaysia and
Philippines.
World leading producer

Rank country production (1000 tons)
1. India 1436
2. Bangladesh 926
3. Thailand 392
4. Indonesia 340
5. Nepal 18.97
(April 2017)
Current Status

Manila, Philippines – a P 1.28 m Department
of Agriculture (DA) project has successfully
raised jackfruit yield in a Leyte town by 82%
to 15.39 metric tons/ha, enhancing
profitability for a fruit that has abundant
value adding prospects when processed.
Current Status

The DA- Bureau of Agricultural
Research (BAR) project in
Mahaplag, Leyte has tapped a
superior variety called EVIARC
sweet, the sweetest known jackfruit
variety that also has good
crispiness.
Current Status

Jackfruit plantations in the Visayas
where devastated by typhoons Yolanda
and Ruby, and in Southern Luzon by
typhoon Glenda. Most jackfruit are
planted mostly in backyards which
explain supply could not keep up with
demand.
