o Advertising is a way of communication
meant to persuade a person to buy or
take some action upon products,
ideals, or services.
History
1729- Benjamin Franklin published the Philadelphia
Gazette which featured a page of new
advertisements.
1841- first advertising agency was opened in
Philadelphia by Volney Palmer
In the early 1900’s advertising took advantage
of radio and cinema to
approach the consumer.
In the 1950’s, advertisers used the television to
promote products.

Advertisers focus on what is popular, “cool”, or “hot”
to get people to buy things.
Advertisements are everywhere you go, and they all
relate to the popular demand of what the
community their targeting wants.

The people in ones life influence the things
they consume.
if you see someone wearing something you
like, or eating a cheeseburger, you might go
out and buy the product.

when you like
something their
doing, wearing,
eating, etc., they
are affecting
what you buy
because your
more likely to
consume the
product if your
friends have it,
and more importantly, like it.
Celebrities
Many people, especially teenagers, look up to and
idolize celebrities, which can affect consumerism.
