Presentation on

Weed detection in crops using aerial

image and Image processing and NN
under the guidance of Mrs. Arooj Nisar

Motivation

• The use of herbicides in crops is a major reason for food

and water contamination. More use of herbicides
damages the health of people, animal etc.

• According to the weed science research, about 33% of

the total losses by agricultural pests are caused by
weeds only.

• Therefore to increase the quality of food we need to

identify the crop and weed using the wavelet
transformation.
WEED DETECTION USING

• Colour Segmentation

• Grayscale conversion

• Edge detection

• Dividing images into blocks

• Filtration
Original Images
 Colour segmentation
 We separate the vegetation part from rest of the
soil
 Only vegetation part is kept and rest is turned to
black
 EDGE DETECTION

 We first convert image to grayscale

 We convert the image consisting only edges and
veins of plant
 Dividing the image into block
 We have to divide the image into blocks
 Filtering
 Filtering is done according to some threshold/average
value
 Convert the blocks with weed into white
Histogram analysis
Histogram analysis
Histogram analysis(less than 25)
Histogram analysis(between 25-225)
Histogram analysis(greater than 225)
Image Preprocessing (Second Method)

• Image acquisition
• Segmentation
• Gray scale conversion
• Noise adding
• Filtering
• Intensity adjustment
• Binary conversion
• Wavelet transformation (db4)
• Feature extraction

WAVELET TARNSFORMATION (db4)

• We use db4 wavelet transformation to extract

features like entropy , energy , inertia , contrast
and homogeneity.

• Extracted features will be used to differentiate

between weed and crop plant up to 90% of
accuracy.
Wavelet Transformation
MORPHOLOGICAL FEATURES

• Size based features Area, Perimeter, Minor axis

and Major axis are used for detection of crop.
After comparing the results of all method crop
and weed is detected.

• After detection crop area is masked and weed co-

ordinates are calculated using mapping
technique.

Work Pending

• Training neural network with approximately 60

images.

• And feeding the data of extracted features n we

will expect accuracy up to 90% with this method.
