CONSTRUCTION OF THERMOELECTRIC SYSTEMS
THERMOELECTRIC MATERIALS

• Materials that are used to build devices that convert

temperature difference into electricity and vice versa
THERMOELECTRIC MATERIALS

•In thermoelectric materials, electrons flow from

hot to cold temperature gradient

•Seebeck coefficient - also known as thermopower

•Figure of merit (z) – efficiency of thermoelectric

materials
THERMOELECTRIC MATERIALS

Good thermoelectric materials should possess:

Large Seebeck coefficients
High electrical conductivity
Low thermal conductivity
EXAMPLE OF THERMOELECTRIC MATERIALS
BISMUTH TELLURIDE (Bi2Te3)
EXAMPLE OF THERMOELECTRIC MATERIALS
LEAD TELLURIDE (PbTe)

• Narrow gap material

• Optimum for mid-
temperature application
• Operates within 500K-900K
EXAMPLE OF THERMOELECTRIC MATERIALS
SILICON GERMANIUM (SiGe)
THERMOELECTRIC MODULE

• Also known as Thermoelectric Generator Module (TEG)

• The core of a thermoelectric generator
• A circuit containing thermoelectric materials that output
usable energy
THERMOELECTRIC MODULE
• It converts potential temperature difference to electricity
while passing a portion of the power in the cold side

• Must operate in a very large temperature gradient for long

periods of time

• Must be able to withstand a large number of thermal cycles,

which cause mechanical fatigue

• May have a temperature rating of 100C to 350C

TYPES OF THERMOELECTRIC MODULE

• Seebeck Module
-a thermoelectric generator module

• Peltier Module
-a thermoelectric cooling module
THERMOELECTRIC MODULE
THERMOELECTRIC SYSTEM

• Also known as Thermoelectric Generator (TEG)

System
• Takes in heat from a source such as hot exhaust, and
outputs electricity using thermoelectric modules
THERMOELECTRIC SYSTEM
• The heat of the hot side of the temperature
gradient must be supplied sufficiently from
a heat source such as exhaust flue

• The cold side must be cooled by air, water

or any suitable medium

• Heat exchangers are used on both sides

CONCLUSION

Thermoelectricity is the use of thermoelectric

devices to produce electricity from otherwise
wasted heat.
