PROBLEM
The agricultural output of each kibbutz is limited by both the amount of available irrigable
land and the quantity of water allocated for irrigation by the Water Commissioner.
The crops suited for this region include wheat, corn and sorghum. These crops differ
primarily in their expected net return per acre and their consumption of water.
In addition , the Ministry of Agriculture has set a maximum quota for the total acreage that
can be devoted to each of these crops by the Southern Confederation of Kibbutzim, as
follows:
AVAILABLE DATA
• Because of the limited water available for irrigation, the Southern Confederation of
Kibbutzim will not be able to use all its irrigable land for planning crops.
• To ensure equity between the three kibbutzim, it has been agreed that every Kibbutz
will plant the same proportion of its available irrigable land.
• The job facing the Coordinating Technical Office is to plan how many acres to devote
to each crop at the respective Kibbutzim while satisfying the given restrictions.
• The objective is to maximize the total net return to the Southern confederation of
Kibbutzim as a whole.

Formulation As A Linear Programming Problem
Objective Function:
Maximize Z = 1000(x1 + x2 + x3 ) + 750(x4 + x5 + x6) + 250(x7 + x8 + x9)
7(𝑥1 + 𝑥4 + 𝑥7 ) - 5(𝑥2 + 𝑥5 + 𝑥8 ) = 0;
4(𝑥2 + 𝑥5 + 𝑥8 ) - 7(𝑥3 + 𝑥6 + 𝑥9 ) = 0;
5(𝑥3 + 𝑥6 + 𝑥9 ) - 4(𝑥1 + 𝑥4 + 𝑥7 ) = 0;
Non negativity
Xj >= 0, for j = 1, 2, ………, 9
Linear Programming Problem
Iteration 1 (atozmath.com)
Negative minimum Zj - Cj is -1000 and its column index is 1. So, the entering variable is x1.
Minimum ratio is 0 and its row index is 10. So, the leaving basis variable is S10.
∴ The pivot element is 3.
Final Iteration (atozmath.com)
Solution
Since all Zj-Cj ≥ 0
x1 = 143,
x2 = 120,
x3 = 30,
x4 = 136,
x5 = 270,
x6 = 194,
x7 = 0,
x8 = 0,
x9 = 0
Max Z = 741,667
Managerial Insights
After solving the problem using Simplex, the maximum Profit/Net Returns that can be
obtained under the given variables and constraints is $741,667.
