9EE603.53 1
Recap

In previous periods we have discussed about

• Construction and working principle of single phase

Induction motors

• Why Single phase induction motor is not self starting

9EE603.53 2
Objectives

On completion of this topic ,you would be able to

know about

• Double field revolving theory

9EE603.53 3
Double Field Revolving Theory

• Stator given 1-phase supply

• Only alternating flux produced

• resolved into two components

• The two components are Ǿf & Ǿb

9EE603.53 4
Double Field Theory

One magnetic field Two magnetic field

9EE603.53 5
Double Field Revolving Theory

• Ǿf & Ǿb are of equal magnitude Ǿf = Ǿb

• Rotating in opposite directions at Ns

• Ǿf in anti-clockwise direction

• Ǿb in clockwise direction

• Ǿr is the resultant of Ǿf & Ǿb

Double Field Revolving Theory

Alternating Stator Field

9EE603.53 10
Double Field Revolving Theory

• the resultant flux is alternating only

• But not rotating

• This alternating flux acting on stationary rotor

• Can not rotate the rotor

• That is why a single phase induction motor is not

self starting

9EE603.53 11
Double Field Revolving Theory
When The Rotor Is At Rest

• Each flux produces it’s own torque

• Ǿf produces Tf torque

• Ǿb produces Tb torque

• Tf & Tb are equal but in opposite direction

• So net torque is zero

and 9EE603.53
Resultant 13
How to Make the Rotor to Rotate

• Relative motion between the stator flux & the rotor is

needed
• So to create relative motion
• Rotor is given an initial start in either direction
• Then torque in that direction increases
• giving the performance similar to 3-phase induction
motor

9EE603.53 14
Rotor Rotating in Stator Pole

9EE603.53 15
Conclusions

• At stand still

• Tf & Tb are equal but opposite in direction

• So net torque on rotor is zero

• So 1-ph IM is not self starting

9EE603.53 16
Conclusions

• When rotor is given an initial start by some external

means

• Resultant average torque increases

in the direction of rotation

• Motor gives performance similar to 3-ph IM
