Test Procedure & Timings
The test of each module will be taken one after the other in the following order

The Speaking part of the test will be taken either on the same day or after a week
depending on the address you mention on the IELTS form

IELTS Test Results
• The Test Result is valid for 2 years
• A band score is awarded for each module
(LRWS)
• The Band scores ranges from 1-9
• There is no passing or failing mark

plan/map/diagram labelling, form and note completion,
table completion, flow-chart completion, summary

Section 1: conversation between two people in everyday social
context.
Section 2: monologue set in everyday social context.
Section 3: conversation between up to 4 people in an
educational, training or academic context.

(True/False/Not Given), identifying writer’s view/claims
(Yes/No/Not Given), matching (information, headings,
features, sentence endings), sentence completion,
summary completion, note completion, table completion etc

Academic Reading Test
• Texts are authentic and taken from books, journals,
magazines and newspaper 3 sections with a total text
length of 2,150-2,750 words
•Written for non-specialist audience and are on
academic topics of general interests
•Text range from descriptive and factual to discursive
and analytical
•May contain non-verbal materials such as diagrams

GT Reading Test
•Section 1 contains two or three factual texts. Topics are
relevant to everyday life in an English-speaking country.
•Section 2 contains two factual texts focusing on work related
issues

handbook, books, magazines, newspaper and official document

Writing Test

Total Timing: 60 minutes


Tasks: There are two tasks for both types of IELTS.
Candidates are required to write at least 150 words in
task 1 and at least 250 words in task two.

Academic Writing Test
Task 1: Presents a table, graph, chart or diagram
Candidate must describe and explain data and the
stages of a process.
Task 2: Write an essay in response to a point of view,
argument or problem.
Response for both task should be written in a
formal style.

GT Writing Test
Task 1: Candidates are presented with a situation and
are asked to write a letter. The letter maybe personal,
semi-formal or formal in style.
Task 2: Write an essay in response to a point of view,
argument or problem. The essay can be slightly more
personal in style than Academic.

Task Achievement General Training: This refers to using the appropriate tone and also
purpose. It also relates to the word count.

Task Achievement Academic: This is about presenting key features, having an


overview and accurate information. This also relates to the word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: This is the same for both GT and Academic. It is based on
organisation of information, paragraphing and linking devices.

Lexical Resource (Vocabulary): This is marked using the same band scores for both
GT and Academic. This is about using appropriate language, using collocations and the
number of errors made.

Grammar: This is also marked using the same band scores for both GT and Academic.
This is about using a range of grammar structures and tenses, punctuation and the

Timing: 11-14 minutes
Tasks: A face-to-face interview with an examiner.
The speaking test is recorded.
Parts: 3 parts
Part 1: Introduction and interview (3-4 mins)
The examiner confirms the candidate identity and
ask general questions on familiar topics e.g. home

Part 2: Individual long turn (3-4 minutes)
•Candidate is given a task card
•Candidate is given 1 minute to prepare for
speaking for 2 minutes.
•Examiner then asks the candidate some
questions on the same topic

Part 3: Two-way discussion (4-5 minutes)
•Examiner asks further questions related to topic
given in part 2
•These questions can give the candidate an
opportunity to discuss more abstract issues and
ideas linked to the topic prompt given in part 2.
