What is Road Safety?

Road traffic safety refers to methods and measures for

reducing the risk of a person using the road network for being
killed or seriously injured.
The users of a road include pedestrians, cyclists, motorists,
their passengers, and passengers of on-road public transport,
mainly buses.
But due to ignorance of safety on the roads there are
accident happening on the road causing injuries and
deaths.
But ,Why these road accidents are
happening?
Road accident is most unwanted thing to happen to a road user, though
they happen quite often. The most unfortunate thing is that we don't
learn from our mistakes on road. Most of the road users are quite well
aware of the general rules and safety measures while using roads but it
is only the laxity on part of road users, which cause accidents and
crashes. Main cause of accidents and crashes are –
Over Speeding
Drunken Driving
Distractions to Driver
Red Light Jumping
Avoiding Safety Gears like Seat belts and Helmets
Unawareness of road rules, regulation and signs.
Steps to be taken for
preventing Road Accidents

 90 % of accidents can be avoided by strict

enforcement of speed limits.
 Existing speed limits should be brought down further.
 Heavy Penalty should be imposed on all those who
cross speed limits. If this is strictly implemented,
nobody will dare to go at high speed.
 Helmet should be made compulsory by law in every
state. Helmet should be made compulsory for back
seat riders also.
 Ensure that the money recovered as Road Tax is fully
utilized for the construction /maintenance of roads.
How to prevent Road Accidents
 TV and other media should be effectively used for
Public safety awareness.
 Major accidents and accident prone areas should
be scientifically analyzed .
 License of those who make serious accidents should be
cancelled.

 Zebra crossings should be provided for

pedestrians for safe road crossings at
appropriate places.
 Signals for road crossings at important busy
places where a large number of people have to
cross the road everyday.
Road Safety Signs

Traffic signs and road markings are silent speakers to the road
users. Every road user should know the marking and signs on the
road and the meaning there of.

Many different traffic signs are to be seen on the roads. They give
advance information about road conditions ahead. Road markings
also give orders, warning or guidance to drivers or riders. Learn the
meaning of these signs and markings and look out for them when
on the road. You will not then be surprised by a bend, a one-way
street or a junction ahead. Good drivers and riders are always
prepared
Road Traffic Signs

regulations to provide safety and free flow of traffic. These
include all signs which give notice of special obligation,
prohibition or restrictions with which the road user must comply.

which fall under this category, are provided as follows.

certain hazardous condition either on or adjacent to the
roadway, so that the motorists are cautious and take the desired
action. Some of the signs, which fall under this category, are
provided as follows.
Some Road Safety Tips

left and let other vehicles pass on the opposite direction to pass.
 Drivers should be in slow speed while turning on the roads.
 Take extra precaution while going on the over-crowded roads
and road junctions.
 Bikers or people using two wheel vehicles must wear helmets of
superior quality otherwise they should never go on the road
without helmet.

among them to avoid collisions and accidents.

age group to be safe and secure as well as
reduce the number of road accidents and
injury cases. So, everyone should strictly
