• Standardized the Filipino surnames
through the Claveria's Decree which
includes the list of surnames called
"Catálogo Alfabético de Apellidos"

• Was issued to avoid the confusion
brought by the lack of individual
surnames by the natives which made
it difficult to distinguish them by
families, which also resulted to a
difficulty on law enforcement.

• The process started by gathering the
surnames the people already had and
sorting them out.
• These names were compiled in the
catalogue and was sent out to the
head of each province who were
required to figure out how many
surnames each town would need and
then assign them alphabetically.

• The oldest male member of the
family are required to choose a
surname and enter it into the new
civil register.
• Filipinos who already have surnames
are allowed to keep it as long as it
wasn't part of the prohibited
surnames.

• Those who are already using a
prohibited surname were allowed to
keep it provided that they could
prove that they had been using the
surname for at least four generations.

• Titular surnames such as Raja
Matanda, Lacandola, Mojica, Tupas,
etc. are not allowed to be chosen
unless they have a just title to possess
them.
