11th Century
• During the 11th Century “Ice Houses”

were used.

• They were large chambers that

usually would have cool temperatures

for storing food and water, and

sometimes ice.
The early fridge

A hole dug into the ground which was cooler than


the surrounding area which protected food that
much more.
Then they created structures like these to store ice cut
from frozen ponds from the warmer air. The shape
and design would change from climate/geography or
the culture that built it.
18th Century
•William Cullen first preformed

refrigeration in 1784.

•It wasn’t used for a practical reason

until 1834
19th Century
•1805- first vapor compression style

•1834- first practical fridge made by

•1876- patent for process of liquefying


gas (necessary for modern day fridges)

•1856- First commercial refrigerators
sold by Alexander C. Twinning

•1859- Ferdinand Carre developed a


fridge that works on ammonia instead
of air.

•1840’s- Refrigerated train cars


transported dairy products and
seafood

•Late 1800’s- large industrial fridges


made for breweries.
