Aim of the Project

The sheet metal cutting process is a main part

of the all industries. Normally the sheet metal
cutting machine is manually hand operated
one for medium and small scale industries
In our project is solenoid valve and control
timing unit is used for automation. The sheet
metal cutting machine works with the help of
pneumatic double acting cylinder
Mission Statement

Use of pneumatically controlled Sheet metal

cutter in an efficient way.

Fabrication of pneumatic sheet cutting machine

with minimization of cost as well assize.

Making the machine automatic and userfriendly

so that it willbe easier for operation.

Introduction
What is a Sheet metal
Sheet metal is simply a metal
formed into thin and flatpieces. The
thickness of sheet is called its gauge.
The thickness above 6mm falls in
Plate category.
There are many metals that can be
made into sheet metal like
Aluminum, Brass, copper, steel, tin
etc. For decorative uses sheet metals
of Silver, gold, platinum are also
used.
Sheet metals are used in Car bodies,
medical tables, roofs for buildings
etc.
Use of sheet metal are now daysin
furniture, shelves or cupboards.

WORKING PRINCIPLE

• The compressed air from the compressor is used as the force

medium for this operation. There are pneumatic double acting
cylinders solenoid valves, flow control valve and the timer unit is
used.
• The arm from the compressor enters to the flow control valve. The
controlled air from the flow control valve enters to the solenoid
valve.
• The function of solenoid valves all of air correct time interval. The
5/2 solenoid valve is used. In one position air enters to the cylinder
and pushes the piston so that the cutting stroke is obtained.
• The next position air enters to the other side of cylinder and pusses
the piston return back, so that the releasing stroke is obtained. The
speed of the cutting and releasing stroke is varied by the timer
control unit circuit.
How Sheet Metal is cut:
The cutting process is done by applying Shear Force
Due to application of shear Force,
the stress in the material will
exceed the ultimate shear strength
and the material will fail and
separate at the cut location.
Shearing force is applied by 2
blades one above and one below
the sheet.
The upper blade delivers a quick
downward blow to thesheet
metal that rests on the lowerblade.
The upper tool penetrates on the
sheet causing the shearing and
material failure.

PROBLEMDEFINITION (Our Objective)

A Pneumatic sheet cutter has to be designed and developed. In order
to reduce human effort in manual operated machine our machine
should ensure automatic operation, finer cutting. In addition to that
the product should be small in size so that it is easier to carry the
product from one place toanother.

ADVANTAGES
The pneumatic is more efficient in the technical
field.
Quick response is achieved
Simple in construction
Easy maintenance and repair
Cost of unit is very less
No fire hazard problem due to overloading
Continuous operation is possible without stopping
DISADVANTAGES
Silencer must be used while
compressing the air
High torque can not be obtained
Load carrying capacity is low

APPLICATIONS
This machine is very useful for small
scale industries
These machines used to cut the roller
sheet metal
All industrial application
Conclusion
Thus our concept is complying to the demands of the
customer whose use the products as well as those who
are new.
The latent needs of customers, which they were not
able to reciprocate properly is estimatedsuccessfully.
The individual functions were studied thoroughly and
were evaluated by each group member.
Further study will involve more analysis about the
product and comparison of similar products availablein
the market.
