NETWORK

DIAGRAM

What is Network Analysis?

Network Analysis requires you to

construct a diagram that
represents the activities to be
completed and to estimate the
duration of each activity.
IMPORTANCE
Uses sequencing that makes you work easy and
organized.
Enables you to identify the duration of work
Produces information on each activity----
indicating how much time is available before
the activity becomes critical to the completion
of the project
TERMINOLOGIES
Float - the period by which a task can be
delayed, brought forward or extended
without affecting the programme and date.

Free Float - Free float is the duration of time, that

an activity be delayed without delaying
the project’s estimated completion time
and without delaying the start of any
succeeding activity.
TERMINOLOGIES

Total Float - Total float is the amount of time that

an activity can be delayed without
delaying the project’s estimated
completion time.

NETWORK DIAGRAM
RULES IN DRAWING THE NETWORK:
Time flows from left to right
Numbers within circles represents events
The Arrowheads determines the direction of flow
between events
Events are known as Head Events or Tail Events
Head events have a number higher than the tail
events
RULES IN DRAWING THE NETWORK:
The length of arrow has no significance and is not
drawn in proportion to the anticipated duration
The orientation of the arrow has no significance
The description of the activity should be written upon
the straight portion of the arrow

* It is important to ensure that the logic of the network

is correct
Lockyer (1974) encourages the adoption of a
rigorous examination of the logic.
‘An activity that depends upon another is shown
to emerge from the head event of the activity on
which it depends’:
“An event cannot be said to occur until all activities
leading to it are complete
No activity may start until all previous activities in
the chain are complete.”
After completing the network and checking the
logic the duration of each activity should be
estimated and included below the activity line.
Activities may be considered in terms of
working, days, weeks or months but the chosen
unit of must be used consistently throughout the
network

Are networks in which the activities are

drawn as nodes. Each node holds all the
relevant information for the activity.

The network is drawn in a similar way as an

Activity-on-Arrow network, but not all of the
same conventions apply
When drawing a precedence diagram:

Time flows from left to right.

The arrowhead determines the direction
of flow of production
The length of the arrow has no
significance
The orientation of the arrow has no
significance
The description of the activity is written
on the node
