6. Methodology
• Wind turbines are a rotating machine that will spin and convert
kinetic energy from the rotation in the wind into mechanical energy
or electricity to use to power your house or anything else.

• There are various type of wind turbines these days.

• If they power machines directly such as a well pump then they are
considered wind mills.

• If the energy produced is instead converted to electricity then the

source is considered a windturbine or wind generator.
• Wind turbines can rotate about either a horizontal or a
vertical axis, the former being both older and more
common. They can also include blades, or be bladeless.
Vertical designs produce less power and are less common.

• Types of Wind Turbines:-

1. Horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWT)
2. Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT)
• Vertical-axis wind turbines (or VAWTs) have the main rotor shaft
arranged vertically. One advantage of this arrangement is that the
turbine does not need to be pointed into the wind to be effective,
which is an advantage on a site where the wind direction is highly
variable. It is also an advantage when the turbine is integrated into
a building because it is inherently less steerable. Also, the
generator and gearbox can be placed near the ground, using a
direct drive from the rotor assembly to the ground-based gearbox,
improving accessibility for maintenance. However, these designs
produce much less energy averaged over time, which is a major
drawback.
• Vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWT) use rotors that run vertically.

• Three well-known types of VAWTs are the

 Darrieus Wind Turbine - a model that collects wind in cups
dragging a turbine around, and that looks much like a 'giant
eggbeater.

 Giromill Wind Turbine - a subtype of Darrieus turbine with

straight, as opposed to curved, blades.

 Savonius Wind Turbine - a dragtype device consisting of two or

three scoops causing a turbine to spin.
• The Darrieus wind turbine is a type of vertical
axis wind turbine (VAWT) used to
generate electricity from the energy carried in
the wind. The turbine consists of a number of
curved aerofoil blades mounted on a vertical
rotating shaft or framework. The curvature of
the blades allows the blade to be stressed only
in tension at high rotating speeds. There are
several closely related wind turbines that use
straight blades. This design of wind turbine was
patented by Georges Jean Marie Darrieus,
a French aeronautical engineer; filing for the
patent was October 1, 1926. There are major
difficulties in protecting the Darrieus turbine
from extreme wind conditions and in
making it self-starting.
• Darrieus's 1927 patent also covered
practically any possible arrangement using
vertical airfoils. One of the more common
types is the H-rotor,also called
the Giromill or H-bar design, in which the
long "egg beater" blades of the common
Darrieus design are replaced with straight
vertical blade sections attached to the
central tower with horizontal supports.
• Savonius wind turbines are a type
of vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT),
used for converting the force of
the wind into torque on a rotating shaft.
The turbine consists of a number of
aerofoils, usually—but not always—
vertically mounted on a rotating shaft or
framework, either ground stationed or
tethered in airborne systems.
• In VAWT main problem is it required a high wind power.
• VAWT is poor self starting capabilities.
• VAWT approximately required a start up between 4m/s
to 7m/s.
• VAWT cut in speed is 4m/s. It is to high for the rotational
moment.
• In this project, We will design & analysis the blades design ,and
also a redesign the blades to compatible for the VAWT .

• After the blades design we analysis the wind speed requirement

and cut in speed ratio.

• In this project we decrease the startup wind requirement ratio.
