Safety Framing

What surrounds your Program

P bar Y Safety Consultants Alberta Canada

Erection of Structures

• Can be both difficult and dangerous

• Many fatal and serious accidents occur

• Principal cause - falls from height

• Other causes include:

– structural instability during erection
– handling, lifting and transporting materials

Safe Place of Work

• Every place of work shall be kept safe.

• Safe access and egress to/from the workplace.

• Prevent persons gaining access to an unsafe place.

• People making places safe must consider their own safety.

Falling Objects

• Precautions must be taken to prevent danger from falling

materials or objects.

• Toe boards, brickguards and working platforms

• Debris nets, fans or exclusion zones

• Materials and equipment to be stored safely to prevent

collapse, overturning or unintentional movement.

Stability of Structures

Stability of Structures
• The stability of any structure (temporary or permanent)
should not be adversely affected by construction work.

• Structures, including scaffolding, must not be overloaded

and loads must be evenly distributed.

• The erection and dismantling of temporary works must be

supervised by a competent person.

Temporary Works Co-ordinator

Principal Activities:
• Co-ordinate all falsework activities
• Ensure the various responsibilities have been allocated and
accepted
• Ensure that a design brief has been established with full
consultation, is adequate, and is in accordance with the
actual situation on site
• Ensure that a satisfactory falsework design is carried out
• Ensure that the design is independently checked for:
– concept
– structural adequacy
– compliance withPthe brief

Temporary Works Co-ordinator

Principal Activities:
• Where appropriate, make the design available to other
interested parties.
• Register or record the drawings, calculations and other
documents relevant to the final design
• Ensure that those responsible for on-site supervision
receive full details of the design, including any specified
limitations.
• Ensure checks are carried out at appropriate stages
covering the more critical factors
• Ensure that any proposed changes in materials or
construction are checked against the original design

Temporary Works Co-ordinator

Principal Activities:
• Ensure that any agreed changes, or correction of faults, are
correctly carried out.
• Ensure that, during use, all appropriate maintenance is
carried out.
• After final check, issue formal permission to load if this
check proves satisfactory
• When it has been confirmed that the permanent structure
has attained adequate strength, issue formal permission to
dismantle the falsework

Erection of Structures

Safety requirements would include:

• stability at all stages of erection of the structure
• the effect of the erection sequence on stability
• realistic assessment of loadings at all stages of
construction
• provision of safe access and working space
• ease of connecting components
• safe handling, lifting, storing, stacking and transportation
of components

Site Hazards and Limitations

• Overhead and electric power lines

• Buried services - gas, water, electricity etc.
• Restricted access - road alignment etc.
• Restricted space for erection, manoeuvring, storage or
onsite fabrication
• Low ground bearing capacity - made up ground or existing
underground structures

P bar Y Safety Consultants Alberta Canada

Site Hazards and Limitations

• Close proximity of other buildings, roads, railways, canals,

rivers etc.
• Proximity of general public to the site
• Activities of other contractors - restrict access - display
signs - inform in writing - co-ordination
• Gases, chemical, fluids or dust from processes on or near
the site

Material Storage

• Clear of obstructions, reasonably level

• Ground capable of taking the loads to be applied
• Sited away from hazards e.g. overhead cables
• Clear access to and through the store area
• Lighting if required

P bar Y Safety Consultants Alberta Canada

Material Stacking

• Materials stacked in safe manner, that allows de-stacking

safely
• Methods of stacking with no risk of collapse or sliding
• Adequate supply of timbers, and wedges
• Sufficient space left to enable safe slinging
• Kept off the ground to prevent unintentional mud/stones
being lifted off the ground

Weather Conditions

• Rain, ice or snow can turn a secure footing into a skating

rink - inspect before work commences
• Beware of hypothermia
• Sudden gust of wind could lead to loss of balance - avoid
fixing roof sheets and felt in windy weather
• At the end of the working day, ensure that loose materials
are not left on the roof

P bar Y Safety Consultants Alberta Canada

Weather Conditions

• Use an anemometer to measure wind speed

P bar Y Safety Consultants Alberta Canada

Weather Conditions

• Consider the effects of very hot weather

– heat exhaustion / stroke
– sun burn / skin cancer
– handling hot metal components

– formworkers
– sheeters and cladders
– post tensioners
– steelfixers
– construction operatives
