Circles

Definition
• The set of all points equidistant
(same distance) to a certain point
(center).
• The symbol for circle is “⊙” and
we name circle using its center.
• ⊙O
Parts of the Circle
• Radius
• 𝐺𝑂, 𝐴𝑂, and 𝐸𝑂 are the
radii of ⊙O.
• It is the segment joining
from the center and any
point on the circle.
Parts of the Circle
• Chord
• 𝐶𝐷 and 𝐴𝐸 are the
chords of ⊙O.
• It is the segment whose
endpoints are any two
points on the circle.
Parts of the Circle
• Diameter
• 𝐴𝐸 is a diameter of ⊙O.
• It is a chord that passes
through the center.
• It is twice the measure of
the radius.
Parts of the Circle
• Secant Line
• 𝐹𝐵 intersects ⊙O at
points F and B.
• It is a line that intersects
the circle in two points.
Parts of the Circle
• Tangent Line
• 𝐻𝐴 intersects ⊙O at
point A.
• It is a line that intersects
the circle at exactly one
point.
Angles
• Central Angle
• An angle whose vertex
is the center of the
circle.
• ∠𝐴𝑂𝐵 is a central angle
of ⊙O.
Angles
• Inscribed Angle
• It is an angle whose vertex lies
on the circle and whose sides
contain chords of the circle.
• ∠XYZ is an inscribed angle of
⊙O.
Arcs
• It is a part of the
circumference (distance
around the circle) of a circle.
• We used the symbol  on top
of the points.
• 𝐴𝐵

Types of Arcs
• Minor Arc
• Is the arc formed by the central
angle.
• The arc measures greater than 0⁰
but less than 180⁰.
• Use two points whenever naming a
minor arc.
Types of Arcs
• Major Arcs
• An arc that is greater than the minor
arc.
• Usually measures greater than 180⁰ but
less than 360⁰.
• Use three points whenever naming a
major arc to avoid confusion.
Types of Arcs
• Semicircle
• It is half of the
circumference of a
circle.
• Measures exactly 180⁰.
• Semicircle AB
Exercises:
Given:
• ⊙ 𝐵 and ⊙ 𝐷 both have
a radius of 2 units.
• 𝐴𝐺 is tangent to ⊙ 𝐷 at
Point 𝐺.
Using only the points shown…
• Name five radii. • Name two central angles.
• Name two diameters. What • Name an inscribed angle.
are their measures? • Name four minor arcs.
