1. Existing sites with one E1 capacity
Impact on Retainability Example:3309

Even the drop call rate is

degraded due to limited
resources
Voice

One E1 capacity is defined at 4200 Cps (ATM cells/sec)

 This limit is reached daily
Impact is seen across all RABS

3. Impact of Single Carrier sites in Multicarrier areas
A “casualty” of low E1 sites

ISSUE
• Ericsson only
allows either
GSM or IFHO
preferred for CM
• Additionally
Examples of Mobility is
Dropped Call
limited on the
“Risk” areas
second carrier
(number of NR in
system is limited)
ACTION:
1. MORE 2 CARRIER SITES
2. Short term Bias: Activation of
Voice calls that enter multirab state will go up to DCH load sharing to force
second Carrier then could be susceptible to drops Multi Rab onto first carrier
GUIDELINE: NOT OK for Single Carrier to be This is being done by Ericsson as

surrounded by Multicarrier. part of HS upgrade Project
4. Ericsson HSPA Capacity Analysis
Summary and Actions
Ericsson Health Check of MTN SA
Action:
HSPA network
All sites with 2x Carriers are getting
HSPA on both. Only available in W10B.
Project planned to be driven by E///
HS upgrade team as need HW
Action:
New EUL parameters are being
implemented after extensive trails.
Rollout already started on 2 nodes.
Ericsson does have a EUL
limitations. Improved in future SW
releases with features (W11 & W12)
Action:
1.No more 1x E1 sites to be
integrated.
2. Current sites should have a plan in
place to be upgraded
Action:
Handset alignment with Marketing
Results based on 3x RNCs

4.Ericsson HSPA Capacity Analysis
Summary- TX findings
Iub limited capacity is a major limiting factor for user peak rates

80% of 1E1 cells are

within 1.6-1.8mbps
range

10 Mbps Throttling

5. Way forward:
“Opening up the radio”- Initiatives tied to Basic Mbps model

Step 2
Step 1

Step 1 Step 2 Note: RBS Stats behind-Not able to see full

impact on throughput etc.
Up to 25% gain!
Motivation:
1. Open up Radio to gain
capacity at NO COST
2. Make Bottlenecks more
Step 1: Increasing UL & DL CE license to match available hardware (RBRNC2 and NLRNC1) visible to ensure better
Step 2: Aligning parameters to new LKF model (RBRNC2 and NLRNC1)
Step 3: Increasing UL & DL CE, aligned parameters to new LKF model (GERNC1)
priority/ focus
3. Reduce RNC Processor Load

Backup: New License Model and Node B Configuration
Why and Disadvantages

Why
•Reduce NW Bottlenecks- Highlighting the areas that’s really limiting the throughput (TX)
•Get more traffic onto HSPA - more efficient than R99
• Take congestion UP to other resources due to HSPA user limitation (reduce these bottlenecks)
•Simplify Site Configuration / Discrepancies

DL Codes / DL
Power Congestion
• Increased R99 users causing
• Increased R99 users
congestion on ATM resources
consumes more DL Codes/ DL
• More users on FACH and (Class A and B)
Power
R99 RABs • R99 less efficient than HSPA
• User throughput degrades ATM Congestion
HSDPA / EUL User on Class A/B
Admission Failures

Disadvantages
•HSDPA/EUL throughput limited by Iub
•No HW reserve capacity due to UL/DL CE LKF matched with HW
•Mitigation- SMS notification when UL/DL CE reaches 85%
© 2008 Mobile Telephone Networks. All rights reserved. 14
5. Way forward:
Prioritized Focus/ OPERATIONAL LIST (1)

Iub Congestion Report Created to Highlight

•Iub limiting HSDPA/EUL throughput
•ATM congesting
•Technology and E1 count

Impact Mitigation:
1. May result in Increased EUL/HSDPA meaning more HW upgrades (but immediate return on investment)
•EUL users requires RAX board additions (Planning have in stock)
•HSDPA users requires HS-TXB boards
•Process: HQ is issuing Requests a week after activating new license model/s

2. Notification on Resource Utilisation

•Implementing SMS/E-mail notification once UL/DL CE reaches 85%
•Engineers will use this as indication to order new RAX/HS-TXB boards

5. Way forward:
Prioritized Focus/ OPERATIONAL LIST (2)
• Transmission can also use RADIO reports to prioritize TX requirements/ lists:
• HDSPA Limiting Ratio (Each 15min interval is between 0 and 100, reports sums all
ratio’s for period of interest and sorts by this to give the worst performing list)
• HS_Frame Lost (as above but this is only for IP)

5. Way forward:
Prioritized Focus/ OPERATIONAL LIST (3)

PROPOSAL: Transmission can also use RADIO reports to prioritize TX

requirements/ lists:
REPORT as per previous Page
http://facts/facts/report/Planning/Planner+Reports/GAU/Transport/ATM_Congestion_Layered
Aggregation of 3G Site KPI’s Per DXX (Transmission Nodes)
•Indicates congesting backhaul
•Combines KPI’s from sites serving off a DXX (Example DXX DCR and CSSR)

5. Way forward:
Going Forward

 RADIO OPTIMISATION
Continue rollout of “opening up the radio”
FNI nodes for HS activation on 1st carrier combined with DCH Load sharing then
network rollout
HS LIMITING RATIO REPORT to be used as priority List by ALL once “radio opened up”
RADIO PLANNING:
Radio Planning will focus on activating 2nd carrier on all 2011 HSPA+ selected sites
with available Tx, plan is complete as many by end Q4.
 HSPA activations on C1 & C2 layers further increasing the dependency on TX, also in
prep for MC activations (42Mbps capability)
 Budget required to top up on equipment i.e. BB cards, ETMFX11 cards, RU/FU kits
and cabling Kickoff work on Top 1000 sites (which should have
been on 21Mbps). Note sites will require physical 18
rework when 21mbps is implemented (more budget)
