Why HONDA CIVIC was leading ???
• First reason is that HONDA CIVIC was the 1st
car in Canada, which was very efficient and
not very expensive.
• So Honda has the first mover advantage over
there.
• Honda beats others on the basis of its
technology and innovation ie after every 2-3
years they came up with new product.
BUT NOW…….
• In Canada, there is a battle between Mazda 3
and Honda Civic concerning the highest selling
car.
• The latest report indicated that the Mazda 3‘s
5,436 units sold in April outdid the Civic by
135, and through the end of last month the
Zoom-Zoom ride leads the Honda by just 21
units.
What Mazda Did????
• Channel conflict is usually an issue for manufacturers as
intermediaries like distributors, and resellers shield
manufacturers from directly reaching end consumers
• Mazda took an innovative approach to solve channel
conflict by transforming their business model by providing
individual dealers with a co-branded e-commerce site that
sells OEM accessories to consumers. The solution allows
Mazda to “touch” the end consumer directly while
enabling dealers to leverage Mazda accessories catalogue
and IT infrastructure. It’s a win-win situation! This was a
perfect example of B2B2C
Action items
(1) Brand-related:
• Strengthen the product line-up by introducing products that
reflect the voice of the customer. Improve customer
satisfaction at all touch points.
• Accelerate development of next-generation dealerships that
are consistent with Mazda’s brand strategy. Improve sales
productivity at exclusive dealers.
• Strengthen marketing initiatives to deepen relationships with
Mazda’s younger customer base.
• Work toward gaining 100 percent control of distributors in
the United States and Canada.
2) Products and Technology:
• Over the course of four years, increase R&D
investment by 30 percent as well as raise capital
investment expenditures by 50 percent compared to
the last four years.

• With evolved Zoom-Zoom attributes, accelerate the

development of next-generation technology for
further business growth after 2011.

• Enhance Mazda’s business structure through an

evolution of current key model line-ups and by
promoting a new business model.
• They have also made their dealerships a
destination. Not only can you "price shop" on their
Internet terminals, you can spend time in their new
central cafe and entertainment zones. These also
tend to bring the customer back for post-sale
service needs (another profit center).
• Besides, if the service customer is "waiting" in a
cafe surrounded by new cars...what might happen?

Does it work? ??????

• Mazda reports that at the showrooms that
have been revamped they are seeing a 32%
jump in sales and a doubling of profits
compared to the dealerships still doing it the
“old way”
