HEAT

EXCHANGER
Definition
• Random House Dictionary: a device for transferring the
heat of one substance to another
• British Dictionary definitions for heat exchanger : a
device for transferring heat from one fluid to another
without allowing them to mix
• Science Dictionary: A device used to transfer heat from
one fluid to another without direct contact of the fluids.
Heat exchangers usually maximize the transfer of heat
by maximizing the contact surface area between fluids,
as when the warmer fluid is passed through a series of
coils or thin plates.
DOUBLE PIPE
HEAT EXCHANGER
• Double pipe heat exchangers are the simplest
exchangers used in industries.
• These heat exchangers are cheap for both design and
maintenance, making them a good choice for small
industries.
• Their low efficiency coupled with the high space
occupied in large scales, has led modern industries to
use more efficient heat exchangers like shell and tube or
plate.
• However, since double pipe heat exchangers are simple,
they are used to teach heat exchanger design basics to
students as the fundamental rules for all heat
exchangers are the same.

four major parts
1. Front Header—this is where the fluid enters the tubeside of the
exchanger. It is sometimes referred to as the Stationary Header.
2. Rear Header—this is where the tubeside fluid leaves the exchanger
or where it is returned to the front header in exchangers with
multiple tubeside passes.
3. Tube bundle—this comprises of the tubes, tube sheets, baffles and
tie rods etc. to hold the bundle together.
4. Shell—this contains the tube bundle.
JACKETED VESSEL
definition
• As its name implies, this type of heat exchanger
consists of a shell (a large pressure vessel) with
a bundle of tubes inside it.
• One fluid runs through the tubes, and another
fluid flows over the tubes (through the shell) to
transfer heat between the two fluids.
• The set of tubes is called a tube bundle, and
may be composed of several types of tubes:
plain, longitudinally finned, etc.

PLATE HEAT EXCHANGER
Definitions

• A plate heat exchanger is a type of heat

exchanger that uses metal plates to transfer
heat between two fluids.
• This has a major advantage over a conventional
heat exchanger in that the fluids are exposed to
a much larger surface area because the fluids
spread out over the plates.
• This facilitates the transfer of heat, and greatly
increases the speed of the temperature change

SPIRAL HEAT EXCHANGER
SPIRAL HEAT EXCHANGER

• Spiral heat exchangers are very basic in their structure.

• They consist of two separate spiral chambers as shown
in the schematic below.
• These two chambers house hot and cold liquids
separated from each other by spiral metal sheet. Heat
transfer coefficients on both sides are high.
• The hot and cold fluid flows are countercurrent to each
other all the way through the exchangers.
• These factors lead to much lower surface area
requirements than shell and tube exchangers.
• These exchangers can be used for highly viscous fluids
at low, medium pressures.

PLATE AND SHELL
HEAT EXCHANGER
Plate & Shell heat exchanger combines the best features of Plate Heat exchanger
and Shell & Tube exchangers:

• High pressure and high temperature capability

With its round and fully welded construction, the unit offers a durable solution
that can stand high pressures and temperatures.

• Compact size
PSHE requires only 25% of the surface compared to Shell & Tube heat
exchangers, however, it is possible to construct PSHE exchangers with over
2000 mtr² of heat transfer area. The compact size of the Vahterus PSHE
minimizes installation, operating and maintenance costs, which again saves
energy and the environment.

• Robust and gasket-free construction

The gasket-free construction is durable enough for the harshest conditions and
prevents maintenance issues and no leakages in very high / low pressures and
temperatures.

• High thermal efficiency

The construction of the PSHE creates high turbulence between the plates, which
enables very high thermal efficiency. This allows user to take full advantage of a
compact heat transfer solution in extremes of temperature and pressure, which
was not possible in traditional compact heat exchangers.
