DEFINITION OF PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING
STRATEGY

Problem-based learning strategy is one of learning based on

cognitive psychology that departs from the assumption that learning
is a process of changing behavior thanks to experience. learning is
not only memorizing a number of facts, but a process of conscious
interaction between individuals and their environment.
3 MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF PROBLEM-BASED
LEARNING STRATEGY
• The problem-based learning strategy is a series of learning activities, meaning that
in its application there are a number of activities that students must do. problem-
based learning system does not expect students to just listen, take notes, then
memorize the subject matter, but through a problem-based learning system students
are required to actively think, communicate, search and process data, and finally
conclude
• Learning activities are directed at solving problems
• problem solving is done using a scientific thinking approach
THE NATURE OF THE PROBLEM IN A PROBLEM-BASED
LEARNING STRATEGY

• Between inquiry learning strategies and problem-based learning strategies

have differences. the difference lies in the type of problem and the objectives
to be achieved. The problem in the inquiry learning model is a closed
problem, meaning the answer is certain but the teacher does not convey it
directly
(2)

• Problems in the problem-based learning system are open, meaning the

answers to these problems are uncertain. each student and even the teacher
can develop possible answers to the problem
• the nature of the problem in learning learning strategies is the gap between
the real situation and the expected conditions or between the reality that
happened with what was expected.
THE STEPS IN PROBLEM BASIC LEARNING STRATEGY

Jhon Dewey an education expert from America explain there are six steps
Problem Basic Learning Strategy known as problem solving method, that is:
1. Formulating the problem
2. Alnalyzing the problem
3. Formulating the hypothesis
4. Collecting data
5. Testing the hypothesis
6. Formulating the recommendation of problem solving
David Johnson and Johnson put forward there are 5 steps Problem Basic
Learning Strategy through
Group Activity
1. Define the problem
2. Diagnose the problem
3. Formulating alternative strategies
4. Determine and implement the choice strategy
5. Doing the evaluation
In generally, Problem Basic Learning Strategy can be done with the
following steps:
1. Aware of the problem
2. Formulating the problem
3. Formulating the hypothesis
4. Collecting data
5. Testing the hypothesis
6. Determining the settlement option
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF PROBLEM
BASIC LEARNING STRATEGY
• Advantages
- The problem solving is good enough
- Problem solving can challenge students to determine the new knowledge
- Problem solving can increase learning activities
- Problem solving helps students to pursuer their knowledge to understand the
problems in real life
- Problem solving helps student develop the new knowledge and be responsible for
learning
- Problem solcing shows students that subjects are basically ways of thinking, not just
learning from teacher or books
- Problem solving is considered to be preferred by students
- Problem solving develop students ability to think critically
- Problem solving provides opportunities for students to apply the knowledge they
have in the real world
- Problem solving develop the student interest
• Disadvantages
- When student do not have the belief that the problem being studied is difficult to
solve, they are reluctant to try
- Need enough time to prepare for a succesful strategy
- Without understanding why they are trying to solve the problem being studied,
they will not learn what they want to learn
