What is Active Learning?
oActive learning occurs when students are given the
opportunity to interact with the subject matter of a

o It is anything students do in the classroom other
than passively listening to a lecture.
oStudents generate rather than receive knowledge. It
is impossible to transmit knowledge.
oThe teacher facilitates rather than dictates the
students’ learning.

oActive Learning Methods are merely tools to
achieve the important goal of allowing students
opportunities to think.
oThe key concept in active learning is that

knowledge can not be transferred rather
information is transferred and knowledge is what
is created when a student thinks about the
information.

The Lecture Method
Traditional lectures are good for giving information
to students quickly and with limited resources.

Tips to help your students to be active learners.

- Allow students to resubmit work that is not up to
standard
- Make students aware that they will gain from what
you are asking them to do
- Explain the relevance of what students are doing
- Deliver varied sessions
- Engage students in activities

- Base your teaching on interesting and/or topical
questions
- Be excited in your sessions
- Have a good relationship with your students

- Be certain of that students able to work with others in
and outside the classroom
- Make sure that you give them frequent praise or
positive comments about their work
- Set personal targets for students
- Encourage students to take responsibility for their
own learning
