The Purpose of this Orientation

Why are you going through this orientation? Let’s


explain.

First, it’s Saudi Aramco requirement that we provide a


safe workplace for all workers, and that includes you.
In order to provides a safe work place to work.

Rules are no good unless people understand and


follow them. In this orientation we will explain our rules
& regulations to you and ensure you know what we
expect of you while you are working here.
Accidents Are Preventable

Let’s begin by saying that we believe that all accidents


and injuries are PREVENTABLE. They occur as a result
of an unsafe condition or an unsafe act, or both. Both
are the result of the actions of people.

Secondly, it is our sincere desire that no one be injured


on our site. That includes you.

We believe you will work safely if you understand what


we expect. This will not only prevent injury to yourself,
but also prevent you form injuring someone else.

Examples - Unsafe Condition

• A unit that runs outside the range of its design


parameters
• A lifting hook without a safety latch
• Pressure in piping where a valve is to be removed
• No shoring in a deep excavation in unstable soil
• Wrong gasket at a flanged connection of piping
that carries hazardous liquid
• Unclassified electrical equipment installed in a
hazardous location

• Not following operating procedures


• Replacing a hydrocarbon pump without Isolation,
Lockout and use of Hold Tag
• Standing under the load during a crane lift
• Not wearing a hard hat at a construction site
• Welding without a welding shield/goggles/hood

• Handling a hazardous chemical without wearing
the specified personal protective equipment

Before You Start Working

Your company is required to:

 Train you in how to work safely

 Tell you about the hazards you may face in doing your
work

 Provide you with tools and equipment that are in good


working order
Before You Start Working

You must:

 Be trained in the use of proper personal protective


equipment

 Use personal protective equipment at all times when your


job requires it

 Never use tools or operate equipment that are not


qualified to use or operate

 Never operate plant equipment


Contactor Responsibility

You must:

 Ensure that your trained in SA safety rules and in job or craft


competencies

 Comply with all SA rules, polices and procedures

 Report injuries, spills and incidents immediately to SA


person in charge

 Report unsafe conditions promptly to SA person in charge


Contactor Responsibility

You must:

 Operate SA equipment only with SA approval

 Conduct pre-job meetings and other safety meetings during


the job

 Assist in incident investigations as necessary


General Safety Rules
 All work related work injuries/illness or vehicle collision,
no mater how slight, shall be reported SA in charge

 All fires, spills and release, no mater how small, shall be


reported SA in charge

 Immediately report unsafe condition, practice, nearmiss


or incident to SA person in charge

 Smoking is permitted in designated areas only

 No unauthorized work may be started in any area or in


any equipment without consent of SA person in charge
General Safety Rules
 Te use or possession of firearms, deadly weapons or
unauthorized explosives on SA property is prohibited

 Possession, use, distribution or bring under the influence


of prohibited drugs or unauthorized alcohol while on the
job or company property is prohibited

 Operation of equipment having “Danger Do Not Operate”


tag is prohibited

 Horseplay or fighting on SA premises is prohibited


General Safety Rules
 Running in work areas, except for emergency purposes is
prohibited

 Climbing or standing on equipment, piping or valves to


do work is prohibited

 Approved PPE shall be worn in the field operations and


other designated areas

 Use only proper tools and equipment maintained in good


working condition

 Do not apply compressed air to yourself or others

 All chemical containers shall be properly labeled


Personal Protective Equipment

 Many injuries are the result of not wearing the proper


personal protective equipment (PPE).

 We expect you to be trained in the use of PPE and to


wear it when you work, or we require it.

 But remember, you should not wear equipment you are


not properly trained and qualified to wear, such as
respirators.

Eye Protection

Eye and face protection should protect the worker from


exposure to hazards from:

 Flying articles

 Liquid chemicals

 Chemical gases or vapors

 Acid and caustic liquids

Side protection for the eyes may be necessary in some


situations.

Hand Protection

Hand protection must be appropriate for the hazards of thejob. It


must protect the worker from hazards such as:

 Skin absorption of harmful substances

 Severe cuts or lacerations

 Chemical burns

 Thermal burns

Be sure you are wearing the right hand protection to protect


against the hazards of each job.

Foot Protection

All employee shall wear safety shoes. The worker’s


shoes must offer protection from:

 Exposures to falling and rolling objects

 Objects piercing the sole

 Electrical hazards

Head Protection

Head protection is necessary when you are working in areas


where there is a potential for injury to the head from falling
objects.

Protective helmets designed to reduce electrical shock


hazard must be worn by each worker when you are near
exposed electrical conductors which could contact the head.

When wearing a hard hat:

 Make sure the headband is adjusted to fit your head

 Don’t drill holes in it to improve ventilation

 Don’t paint it – some paints may soften the shell material

 Never carry anything inside your hard hat; this might


interfere with the shock absorbing capabilities

Not wearing a hard hat is a major factor in many head injuries.

Hearing Protection
Without proper protection, prolonged exposure to excessive
noise can cause permanent hearing loss.

Your hearing protection device should have a noise


reduction rating (NRR) that indicates the reduction in noise,
expressed in Decibel (dB) level, to an acceptable level.

Proper fit is essential, and the device must be in good


condition.

You must wear appropriate hearing protection in areas we


have designated as hearing protection areas, and you may
not perform any work that produces noise levels above the
90 dB (decibel) level without first clearing it with your plant
contact person.

Types of Respirators:

The different types of respirators are designed for specific


uses.

The disposable respirator will protect against different


gases and vapors depending on the type of cartridge being
used.

Do not use a respirator unless you have been fit tested and
trained in its use. This includes disposable.

In addition to the more basic items of PPE we


have examined, there are many others, including
lifelines, safety harnesses, aprons, hot suits and
disposable body covers.

Always wear the personal protective equipment


that will protect you from physical and health
hazards that are present in your workplace.

If In Doubt, Ask

This module has given you an overview of how we


expect you to work safely while you are on our
site.

We do not want you to assume anything. If you


have doubts about any aspect of your work here,
ask your supervisor or plant contact person.
Summary
This is what we require of your company:

 No chemicals will be brought on site without proper


clearance and MSDS

 No defective tools or equipment will be brought on site,


and only qualified workers use or operate tools and
equipment

 Workers will be provided with licks for lockout

 Proper PPE will be provided for all their workers, and


they will be trained and qualified to use it

 No permit required work will be performed without the


proper permit
Summary

This is what we require of you. You must:

 The company will have an emergency and medical


treatment plan for the workers

 All of our safety and environmental rules will be followed


 Know the chemicals you work with

 Never use defective tools or equipment

 Only use tools and equipment that you are properly


trained and qualified to use

 Follow our confined space rules


Summary

This is what we require of you. You must:

 Lockout and tag out when it is required

 Have and wear the proper PPE

 Never expose rain water to chemicals or other materials


that could produce pollution

 In addition to these requirements, you must obey our


posted signs and rules
Summary

Our Responsibilities

We are required to provide a safe workplace. We will not ask you


to perform any task that would put you, your company, or any of
our employees at risk.

We have a process safety plan that details the hazards in our plant
processes. These hazards must be discussed before you work on
any of our process equipment.

We have an emergency plan that includes accounting for all


employees in an emergency situation, including you.
Summary
Here is what is required of all of us:

Communications

 Before work begins, there must a discussion of what is to


take place

 As work progresses, should there be a problem, we must


stop work and resolve the problem before work resumes

 If there is a change in pre-arranged plans, or any time our


plans cannot be followed, this must also be
communicated

 In other words we must plan the work, then work the


plan!
Safety, It’s Up to You

Your safety depends mostly on you. We expect you to


work safely so that you do not injure yourself or
someone else.

We cannot tolerate violations of our safety rules, there


is just too much at stake.

Safety is a primary considerations when we select


contractors to work at our site.
