INTRODUCTION

• Bamboo characterized as a bio degradable ,renewable and an energy efficiency

natural resource.

• It is an environmentally sustainable building material.

• It has been used as construction material in certain areas of centuries .

• Bamboo can be used as an alternative material in reinforcement of concrete.

BAMBOO CHARACTERISTICS

• Bamboo is a giant grass , not a tree.

• The density of fibres in cross section of a bamboo shell varies with thickness as well as
height.

• Bamboo can prevent pollution.

• The strength of bamboo is greater than most of the timber products.

• Bamboo is more prone to insect attack than other trees and plants.
SELECTION OF BAMBOO

• Use only bamboo showing a pronounced brown colour.

• This will ensure that the plant is at least three years old.

• Select the longest large diameter culms available.

• There are more than 1500 species of bamboo, but only certain species can be used for the
construction process.

• Among 1500 species of bamboo, the best one must checked, tested to satisfy the
requirement as a reinforcing material.

• It should have good engineering properties.

• Transportation should be economic.

• Try to avoid those bamboos that are cut either during spring or summer seasons.

• It should be available in large quantity from near by plantations.

• Considering these factors , DENDROCALAMUS STRICTUS is selected as it is available

abundance in the region and has good engineering properties to be used as a engineering
material.
CONSTRUCTION PRINCIPLES

• Bamboo reinforcement should not be placed less than 11/2 inches from the face of the
concrete surface.

• Reinforcement should be evenly spaced and lashed together on short sticks placed at right
angles to the main reinforcement.

• The ties can be made with vegetation strips.

• Spacing of the stirrups should not exceed 6 inches.

• The same mix designs can be used as would normally be used with steel reinforced
concrete.

• Concrete slump should be as low as workability will allow.

• Excess water causes swelling of the bamboo.

• High early-strength cement is preferred to minimize cracks caused by swelling of

bamboo when seasoned bamboo cannot be waterproofed.
PREPARATION OF BAMBOO

• SIZING

• SEASONING: When possible, the bamboo should be cut and allowed to dry and season
for three to four weeks before using. The culms must be supported at regular spacing’s to
reduce warping.

• BENDING: Bamboo can be permanently bent if heat, either dry or wet, is applied while
applying pressure. This procedure can be used for forming splints into C-shaped stirrups

• WATER PROOF COATINGS

BAMBOO AS A ENGINEERING MATERIAL

DURABILITY:

• The durability varies with the type of species, age, conservation condition, treatment and
curing.

• Bamboo reinforcement is more durable than steel reinforcement.

• The durability increases with the decrease in humidity and starch content of the bamboo
EFFECT OF WATER ABSORPTION:

• The main shortcomings of bamboo is its property of water absorption.

• The dimensional variation of untreated bamboo due to water absorption can cause micro
or even macro cracks in cured concrete.

• This can be controlled by treating the bamboo.

BONDING STRENGTH:

• Properties influence the bonding strength

1. Swelling of bamboo pushes the concrete away

2. Creates voids in the concrete
3. Leads to the cracking of concrete

• Bonding strength can be increased by 90% by treating the bamboo.

ADVANTAGES OF BAMBOO REINFORCED CONCRETE

• Low cost of construction

• Bamboo is easily accessible

• It is eco-friendly as it absorbs NO2 in water and carbon dioxide in air.

• It withstands 7.8 Richter of seismic attack.

CONCLUSION

• The environmental and financial comparison demonstrates that bamboo can compete with
building material.

• Bamboo is a natural product and will therefore always have some of irregularity.

• It is therefore suggested that the bamboo culm should be used in functions were the
measurement requirements are not entirely precise or fixed, as in temporary buildings
(e.g., pavilions and tents) or small civil projects.

• Furthermore, bamboo can play a role as a non-supporting or finishing material
