PROJECT VELOCIY &

BURNDOWN CHART

What is velocity???
velocity is the amount of work your team
gets through in a amount of time. As with
the burndown charts,velocity can be
measured in person-hours, number of
tasks, story points, or whatever other unit
of measurement you use for estimating
work.
Velocity principle
•The main idea behind velocity is to help
teams estimate how much work they
can complete in a given time period
based on how quickly similar work was
previously completed
Velocity Charts.

• In Agile we are specifying

Velocity using graphs.
• The unit of works per
iteration is known as Velocity.
Measuring The Velocity Of
Agile Team.

• The velocity of a Scrum team is

the number of story points (or
person-hours etc) completed in
a sprint.
Agile Scrum FAQ's
• How is velocity of an agile
development team calculated?
• What unit is used to measure velocity?
• Do meetings, phone calls, email get
included in velocity?
• Does maximum velocity mean
maximum productivity?
• What if velocity fluctuates?
• How long does it take for velocity to
stabilize?
• How do I estimate future iterations?
BURN DOWN CHART

 A burn down chart is a

graphical representation of work
left to do versus time. It is often
used in agile software
development methodologies such
as Scrum.
Burn down Chart answers the
following questions:
1. How fast is the team completing the remaining
work?
2. Is the team adding work during iteration? Is
scope there creeps?
3. How much of work can the team complete in the
available time?
4. When can the team finish the work?
5. When can the team finish the current iteration?
CREATING BURNDOWN
CHARTS
• Each member picks up tasks from the task set
breakdown and works on them.

• When they track product development using the

Burn down chart, teams can use a sprint Burn
down chart and a release Burn down chart.
SPRINT BURN DOWN CHART

The Sprint Burn down Report shows the progress

within the Sprint toward reaching the Sprint Goal.
 It is a tool which is used to graphically
represent the amount of work remainig to be
done for the completion of a sprint
 It allows easy estimation if the Sprint Goal can be
reached in time or if the team has to find additional
measures to speed-up completion of the remaining
activities
Sprint burndown chart shows.....
1)Total effort
2)Amount of work remaining
3)Number of days in sprint &number
of days past
4)Ideal trend
5)Current trend

RELEASE BURN DOWN
CHARTS
Progress on a Scrum project can be tracked by
means of a release burndown chart. The
ScrumMaster should update the release burndown
chart at the end of each sprint.
The horizontal axis of the sprint burndown chart
shows the sprints; the vertical axis shows the
amount of work remaining at the start of each
sprint.
MISTAKES IN BURN DOWN CHART

Following are some common mistakes that can cause

burn-down charts to be misleading:

• Multiple stories have a common task.

• Tasks are too detailed or too big.
• There is misunderstanding between effort remaining
and effort spent.
•Discipline is needed to update daily.
ADVANTAGES
 Single planning and tracking tool for
the team:The team comes up with a tasks
breakdown, the team updates estimated
effort, and the team also updates effort
remaining. This empowers the team to own
the plan.
 Risk mitigation by daily visibility:
The burn-down chart, on the other hand,
provides daily feedback on effort and
schedule, thereby mitigating the risks and
raising alarms as soon as something goes
wrong.
 Communication tool for customer
and other stakeholders:Burn-down
charts are an effective communication
tool for customer and stakeholders.

Placeholder to track retrospective

action items: It's a good practice to
include retrospective action items from the
previous sprint as nonfunctional
requirements in the task breakdown for
the current sprint.
CONCLUSION
Velocity help the team to estimate, how much work
they can complete in a given time period.
The sprint burn down chart is a graphical
representation of work left to do versus time. The
burndown chart is an essential part of any agile
project and is a way for the team to clearly see
what is happening and how progress is being
made during each sprint.
