Analytical Exposition Text

Exposition is a comprehensive description and

explanation of the theory. Thus, exposition text
talks about the writer’s view about certain issue
discussed in the text. There are two kinds of
exposition text: Analytical text and hortatory
exposition. In this presentation, we are going to
discuss only the analytical one. Analytical,
according to Oxford Dictionary, means “relating’
to or using analysis or logical reasoning”.
Therefore, analytical exposition text is composed
based on facts, clean thought, and sensible
reasoning.

 Social Function

Every kind of text has its own function; each of them is written for a
reason. The social function of an analytical exposition text is to
persuade the readers or listeners that something is metter or is the
case. There is no suggestion or recommendation in this text, so the
text is not written to persuade the readers to do something.

– Using causal conjunction
– Using Simple Present Tense
– Using compound and complex
sentence.
– Use word that link argument,
such as firstly, secondly, and
reasoning through causal
conjunction, such as in addition,
furthermore, however,
therefore.

 Generic Structure

The structure of an analytical exposition text is as follow:

Thesis : The first paragraph is the introduction of the text. This part present the
topic discussed in the text and the writter’s position related to that topic.

- Argument(s): The next paragraph (usually up to before the last paragraph ) is

where the writter explains the arguments to support his/her opinion.
- Reiteration: In the part, put in the last paragraph of the text , the writter
restates his/her opinion about the case. Analytical exposition text does not
include any suggestions from the writter. Instead, the restatement is
expressed to emphasis the writter’s position that something is the case.

 Language Feature

• The language features of analytical exposition text :

- Use of simple present tense to present facts and opinions
- Use of relational process
- Use of external conjunctions to enhance the argument by linking to facts, actual data,
and the real world events.
- Use pf internal conjunctions to elaborate and itemize steps in an argument, such as
firstly, secondly, next, finally, etc
- Use of causal conjunctions such as because, since, on account of, etc.
- Use of contrastive conjunctions such as however, but, nevertheless, etc.
