The term environment has been derived from a
French word “Environ” which means to surround.
It includes both a biotic (physical or non-living)
and biotic (living) environment. Human beings are
constantly interacting with the environment in
order to fulfill their needs.
Types Of Environment
1. Physical Environment: It is also known as abiotic
environment and natural environment. It includes non living
things.
2. Biotic Environment: It is also known as biological
environment. It include living things.
3. Social or cultural environment: this type of
environment includes the culture and life style of the human
beings.
World environment day
 Every year, people and organizations around the
world observe 5th of June as the World Environment
Day.
What is water pollution?
 When something is added to the environment that
makes it unclean or unsafe it is called pollution. Water
pollution occurs when harmful substances are released
into the water in large quantities which cause damage
to people, wildlife, or habitat or indirectly into water
bodies without proper treatment to remove harmful
compounds.
Signs of polluted water
 Bad taste of drinking water.
 Offensive odors from river, lakes and oceans.
 Decrease in number of fishes in fresh water and sea
water.
 Oil and grease floating on the surface

Sources of water pollution
There are various classifications of water
pollution. The two main sources of water
pollution can be seen as following:
 Point sources
 Non-point sources
Causes Of Water pollution
 Sewage And Waste Water: Sewage,
garbage and liquid waste of households,
agricultural lands and factories are
discharged into lakes and rivers. These
wastes contain harmful chemicals.
 Industrial Waste: Industrial waste
contains pollutants which are extremely
harmful to both people and environment.

 Oil Pollution: Sea water gets polluted due
to oil spilled from ships and tankers while
traveling.
 Acid Rain: Acid rain is pollution of water
caused by air pollution.
 Global Warming: Due to global warming,
there is an increase in water temperature.
Effects of water pollution
 Groundwater contamination from pesticides causes
reproductive damage within wildlife in ecosystems.

 Swimming in and drinking contaminated water causes

skin rashes and health problems.

 Sewage, fertilizer, and agricultural run-off contain
organic materials.

 Water pollution causes flooding.

 Oil spills in the water causes animal to die when they

ingest it or encounter it.
Water treatment
 Water treatment is any process that makes water
more acceptable for a specific end-use. The end
use may be drinking, industrial water supply,
irrigation, river flow maintenance, water
recreation or many other uses, including being
safely returned to the environment. Water
treatment removes contaminants and undesirable
components, or reduces their concentration so
that the water becomes fit for its desired end-use.
Treatment for drinking water
production
Polluted water treatment
Industrial water and wastewater
treatment
Domestic water treatment
Conclusion
 Water is a natural resource. Due to ever increasing
industrialization, urbanization, this precious resource
is continuously under stress. The pressure of
increasing population , loss of forest cover, use of
chemical fertilizers etc are causing water pollution.
There are many new water purification techniques
which have come up to purify water. Research is
being conducted all over the world to develop more
and more techniques which can generate pure water at
low cost.
