What is CETP?
Effluent treatment plants need land for construction, capital cost, power and specialized
manpower for their operation and maintenance. Because of these constraints, small scale
industries can not afford to have their own effluent treatment facilities and therefore,
combined effluent from all small scale industries are to be brought to a centralized place for
treatment. This facility is called as common effluent treatment plant (CETP).
Ichalkaranji Textile Development Cluster Ltd

Ichalkaranji is known as the Manchester of Maharashtra. Many textile industries are located
in this city. Some of them are small scale industries and some of them are medium scale
industries. The wastewater from this industries are passes to Ichalkaranji CETP. The Capacity
of Ichalkaranji textile CETP is 12 MLD.

Processes involved in wastewater treatments

Collection tank

The wastewater comes from textile industries into the collection tank through underground pipes.
Various floating materials and chemical content present in this wastewater.
a] Preliminary Treatment
1.Screening
Screening is the first unit operation at
any waste any wastewater treatment processes. It
involves involves the removal of large non
biodegra biodegradable and floating solids such as
plastic, small pieces of cloths etc.
Medium sized bar screens are used in
this CETP plant.

2.Grit removal
It is used to remove suspended inorganic
particles such as sandy and gritty matter
mm from wastewater,
Grit removal
Oil and grease trap
Removal of oil and grease from a waste water stream reduces the potential for equipment problems
to occur further downstreams.

b] Primary Treatments
1. Equalization tank

Equalization tanks are used to reduce

the amount of chemicals utilize
minimimize temperature variations ,
maintain the appropriate Ph level.
2.Flash mixer
When wastewater comes in the
flash flash mixer then lime,
polyelectrolyte polyelectrolyte and ferrous
sulphate sulphate added in this water.

3.Primary clarifier
It is used to remove solid
particulates particulates or suspended solids
from from wastewater.
Primary clarifier
c)Secondary Treatment
1.Activated sludge process
Wastewater aeration is the process
of adding air into water to allow
aerobic biodegradation of the
pollutant components.

Secondary clarifier
The secondary clarifier is used to
remove settable suspended solids.

Secondary clarifier
Coagulants added in water
Lime, polyelectrolyte and ferrous
sulphate these coagulants added
in water.

d)Tertiary Treatment
1.Activated carbon filter
Activated carbon filter is an
adsorptive process in which the
contaminants is attracted and
adsorbed into the surface of the
carbon particles.

Activated carbon filter

2.Pressure sand filter
Pressure sand filter consists of a multiple layer of sand with a variety in size and specific gravity.

Treated water tank: The water from tertiary treatment passes to the treated water tank.

Sludge thickener tank

Sludge thickening normally
refers to process of reducing
the free water content of
sludge.

Decanter
In decanter solid and liquid separate out and remaining wastewater passes to filter press.

Safety of workers

How to ensure safety at CETP operation and maintenance

1. Use safety shoes with non slippery soles.
2.Do not mix chemicals without supervision of chemist or safety professional.
3.Check electrical equipment for safety before use or at least check if all cables are properly
insulated.
Conclusion

The Common Effluent Treatment Plant of Ichalkaranji is very good example of reuse of water.
Various treatments given to wastewater and treated water is passed to agriculture. The sludge
is produced which is hazardous. It passes to Ranjangoan.
