What is Water
Resource
Engineering???
• Involves planning and
management of various
constructed facilities that
provide solutions for the
supplying of water that’s fit for
human use

• Removing water when

people are done using it
•developing efficient methods of avoiding damage
from floods (excess water)

`
APPLICATION OF
WATER RESOURCES
ENGINEERING
Design of various
hydraulic structures
such as breakwaters
and dams, sewage
conduit.
“Management
of waterways-
flood and
erosion
protection.
Another important application
is environmental management
Hydroelectric-po
wer development

Irrigation, water supply and navigation- in which

water is utilized for beneficial purposes.
Different Aspects
That water resources
Engineering is used
Flood forecasting,
flood management
-A process of estimating and predicting th
e magnitude, timing and duration of floodi
ng based on known characteristics of a rive
r basin, with the aim to prevent damages t
o human life, to properties, and to the envi
ronment.
Reservoir Operation
-An enlarged natural or artificial lake, storage
pond or impoundment created using a dam or
lock to store water. Reservoirs can be created by
controlling a stream that drains an existing body
of water.
Dam Break Analysis

-is simulation of possible

failures in a dam due to
natural/ unnatural events
.
River Ecology

River ecosystems are flowing

waters that drain the landscape,
and include the biotic interaction
s amongst plants, animals and
micro-organisms, as well as
a biotic physical and chemical
interactions of its many parts
River Management

The River Management

Program provides technical
and regulatory assistance for
those activities that involve
construction or excavation in
rivers and streams.
Sediment Transport and
River Morphology
Sediment transport is the
movement of solid particles
(sediment), typically due to a
combination of gravity acting on
the sediment, and/or the
movement of the fluid in which
the sediment is entrained.
Wetlands
A place where the land is covered
by water, either salt, fresh or
somewhere in between. Marshes
and ponds, the edge of a lake or
ocean, the delta at the mouth of a
river, low-lying areas that frequently
flood—all of these are wetlands.
Basin-wide water resource
planning
The purpose of this plan is to identify and
develop management recommendations for
water resources issues of interstate and/or
basin-wide significance. It aims to facilitate
achievement of common goals, including
protection of water supplies, drinking water
sources, water quality, and aquatic life.
Watershed Management

Is the study of the relevant characteristics of a

watershed aimed at the sustainable distribution of
its resources and the process of creating and
implementing plans, programs, and projects to
sustain and enhance watershed functions that
affect the plant, animal, and human communities
within the watershed boundary.
Soil and Groundwater
Contamination
Groundwater contamination occurs when
man-made products such as gasoline, oil, road
salts and chemicals get into the groundwater and
cause it to become unsafe and unfit for human
use. Materials from the land's surface can move
through the soil and end up in the groundwater.
