Design of Machine Elements (3165171)
 A needle roller bearing is a special type of roller
bearing which uses long, thin cylindrical rollers resembling
needles.
 L/D ≥ 4
 They are used to reduce the friction of a rotating surface.
 They can support a greater load.
 They are compact.
Types of
needle roller bearing

A. Needle roller and cage assemblies.

B. Drawn cup needle roller bearings.
C. machined rings Needle roller bearings.
D. Needle roller thrust bearings.
E. Track rollers.
Needle roller and cage assemblies
 Features
 Lowest cross section among rolling bearings.
 High load carrying capacity.
 High stiffness.

Single row Double row

 Shaft and housing bore can serve as raceways.

 Require minimal radial space.
Drawn cup needle roller bearings
 Drawn cup needle roller bearings have a deep drawn, thin-walled
outer ring.
 These bearings are mounted with a tight interference fit in the
housing.
Features
 High load carrying capacity and stiffness.
 Low cross section.

 The housing bore cannot be used as a outer raceway.

 Very compact and economical bearing arrangement is required.
Machined rings needle roller bearings
Features
 Low cross section.
 Very High load carrying capacity.
 Separable design.
 High stiffness.
Needle roller thrust bearings
Features
 Accommodate heavy axial loads and peak loads.
 Extended bearing service life.

 Faces of adjacent machine components can serve as raceways.

 Needle roller thrust bearings take up no more space than a
conventional thrust washer.
Track rollers
Track rollers are designed to run on all types of track.
 Features
 Accommodate high radial loads
 Long service life
 Less bending stress
 used in cam drives, conveyor systems, etc.
Types of track rollers
 cam rollers (yoke-type track rollers based on ball bearings)

Single row cam roller

Double row cam roller

 Support rollers (yoke-type track
rollers based on roller bearings)
Used for low speed, heavy load

Support roller with flange rings

 Cam followers (stud-type track rollers
based on roller bearings)

Used for low speed, heavy load and impact

load.
Since stud is fitted with the screw it can be
easily fitted to the machine with the nut.
