LINEAR EQUATIONS
IN TWO VARIABLES

Having two unknowns

Power of unknowns =1

2k-r=7
Faridah has RM 4.50 consisting
only 20¢ and 50¢ coins . Write an
equation based on the information
given.

Let x = 20 ¢ coins and

y = 50 ¢ coins
Therefor 20x + 50y = 450
or 2x + 5y =45
ADULTS RM 2 EACH
CHILDREN 80 CENT EACH

The above table shows the entrance fees to an

exhibition . On a particular day , the total fees
collected from x adults and y children were
RM 400. Find the equation involving x and y .
Solutions
2. An actor has recently starred in two movies
and three televisions dramas. His net income
from these movies and dramas is estimated to
be RM 500,000.
X= no of girls
y= no of boys
x + y=30
m= payment for movies
d = payment for dramas
2x + 3y = 500000
Construct a linear equation in two variables
for the following diagrams

Perimeter of the
triangle is 50 cm

y cm

Q
Complete the following table.
Equations x y

x+y=5 3

2x – 3y = 6 2

3 – 2x = y 5

3y = 4x - 1 4
SIMULTANEOUS LINEAR EQUATIONS

2x + 3y = 9 2m + 3n = 7
x–y =7 m – 2n = 7

2x – 3y = -3 x = 2y
3x + y = 8 3x – y = 10
TWO WAYS OF SOLVING SIMULTANEOUS LINEAR EQUATIONS

Solve x – y = 3 and 2x + 3y = 1

x -y=3 (1)

2x + 3y = 1 (2)
From (1) , = ,
Substitute this in (2) , we get 2( ) +3y =1
Substitute y = -1 into eqn (1)
6 + 2y + 3y = 1
x–y=3
5y = -5 x – (-1) = 3
x=2
Solve 2 x + y = 9 and 3x - y = -4

2x + y = 9 (1)

3x - y = -4 (2)
From (1) , = ,

Substitute this in (2) , we get 3x – ( ) = -4

3x – 9 + 2x = -4
Substitute into eqn (1)
5x = -4 + 9
2(1) + y = 9
5x = 5 y=9-2
1. ELIMINATION METHOD

Solve x – y = 3 and 2x + 3y = 1

x -y=3 (1)

2x + 3y = 1 (2)

(1) X 2
Substitute y = -1 into eqn (
Subtract the 2x -2y = 6
x–y=3
equation , _
2x + 3y = 1 x – (-1) = 3
-5y = 5 x=2
y = -1
1. ELIMINATION METHOD

Solve 2x + y = 9 and 3x - y = -4

2x + y = 9 (1)

3x- y = -4 (2)

Substitute x = 1 into eqn (1

Add the 2x + y = 9
equation , 2(1) + y = 9
+ 3x - y = -4 y=7
5x= 5
x=1
1. ELIMINATION METHOD

Solve 2a + 3b = -15 and 5a + 2b = 1

2a + 3b =-15 (1)
5a + 2b = 1 (2)
What would you like to eliminate? a or b ?
(1) X 2 4a + 6b =-30
(2) X 3 10a + 6b =3
Substitute a = 3into
Subtract the 4a + 6b= -30 eqn (1)
equation , _
-15a + 6b= 3 2(3) + 3b =-15
-11a = -33 b = -7
a=3
