TITLE
Atoms and
Molecules
OBJECTIVE
Compare and contrast
atoms and molecules.
PROBLEM
1.What are molecules made of?
2.How to make models of
molecules with 2 or more
atoms?
PROCEDURE
1. Cover your table with old
newspaper so as not to soil it.
PROCEDURE
2. Get 1 color of clay to make 5
small spheres. These spheres will
be your hydrogen-atom models.
Label them H.
PROCEDURE
3. Make another 5 small spheres
from the second color of clay. These
spheres will be your oxygen-atom
models. Label them O.
PROCEDURE
4. From the 3 and 4 color of clay,
rd th

make 1 of each sphere. One will be

your carbon – atom model and the
other will be your nitrogen-atom model.
Label them C and N, respectively.
PROCEDURE
5. Cut the coconut midrib into 8
parts about 2 inches each.
PROCEDURE
6. Join your atom models using
the coconut midribs to make the
following models:
PROCEDURE
•Oxygen molecule – 2 atoms of oxygen (O2)
•Water molecule – 2 atoms of hydrogen and 1 atom of
oxygen (H2O)
•Carbon dioxide molecule – 1 carbon atom and 2 oxygen
atoms (CO2)
•Ammonia molecule – 1 nitrogen atom and 3 atoms of
hydrogen (NH3)
