INTRODUCTION
SCAFFOLDS IN TISSUE ENGINEERING
• Tissue engineering along with regenerative medicine can be
used to create ‘Scaffolds’ in the human body.
• These scaffolds are used to support organs and organ
systems that may have been damaged after injury or disease.
It is used to rebuild organs and return normal function.
MATERIAL SELECTION CRITERIA
• Having a highly porous structure
• Be made from biodegradable materials
• Have a surface chemistry conducive for
cellular attachment
• Proliferation and differentiation
• Adequate structural integrity for the
application loading in order to withstand
• Be Cyto-compatible and easily fabricated
• Moulded or shaped into the desired
morphology
CHITOSAN
• Natural biopolymers that have been utilized as 3D porous
scaffolds for different biomedical applications.
• Chitosan is a polysaccharide produced by de-acetylation of
natural chitin, which is abundantly available in the shells of
arthropods and cell walls of fungi.
