COMPOSITE:- A composite material is a material made from two or more constituent material with significantly different physical and chemical properties that, when combined, produce a material with characteristics different from the individual components ABOUT THE PROJECT • This work aims to study the mechanical properties of the hybrid composite material at different weight percentages of the fibers. • The properties of banana fiber is less as compare to glass fiber. • The properties of hybrid composite material is greater than the banana fiber and nearer to the glass fiber RAW MATERIALS ABOUT THE PROJECT • REINFORCEMENT:- • Banana fibers and glass fibers are the two reinforcing fibers used for the fabrication. • Preparation of banana fiber by collecting the banana stem and we can extract it. • The s-glass fibers of 500gms of synthetic fiber were used for the fabrication. • MATRIX:- • The matrix will act as the binding agent for the fibers and also provides support for carrying the load. The thermosetting epoxy resin is used as the matrix material for the composites. BANANA FIBER Properties of banana fiber • It is bio-degradable and has no negative effect on environment and thus can be categorized as eco-friendly fiber. • Banana fiber is similar to that of bamboo fiber, but its fitness and spin ability is better. • It is highly strong fiber. • It ha smaller elongation. • It absorbs as well as releases moisture very fast. • It is light in weight. Glass fibers • The characteristic advantages of glass fiber are high strength, very good tolerance to high temperatures and corrosive environments. • Several different glass composites are available the most common are S-Glass(S stands for high strength) E-Glass (E stands for electrical) S-GLASS FIBER EPOXY HARDNER(Arldite HY951) • Araldite HY951 hardener was used as a binder during the fabrication. • It has low viscosity, cure at room temperature. • Good mechanical strength. • Good resistance to atmospheric and chemical degradation PROCEDURE • There are many techniques available for the fabrication of the composites such as vacuum molding, compression molding, resin transfer molding etc. • one of the most commonly used methods is the hand lay up method. • This is simple and cost effective method of fabrication. At the first step a sheet of releasing film is placed over the flat molding surface. • Then a thin coat of epoxy resin was applied over the film using the brush as. The first layer of the glass fiber mat is placed over the resin is applied and a layer of the banana fiber is placed over the previous layer. • This procedure was continued for the further layers, until desired thickness was obtained. • On the top of the last layer, to get a good surface finishing a layer of resin is applied. Finally a sheet of releasing film is placed on the top and light rolling was done. • Then a weight of 10 to 20 kg was applied on the composite. • The material is allowed to cure for about 24 hours and then the material is removed from the mold.
