• The country is officially called “The
People’s Republic of China”
• It is the world’s most populous country
with a population of around 1.404
billion.
• Covering approximately 9,600,000
square kilometers, it is the third largest
country by total area.
SOCIETY
• China officially recognizes 56 distinct
groups. The largest is Han Chinese, who
constitute 91.51% of the total population.
• There are as many as 292 living languages
in China. Most commonly spoken is the
Sinitic branch of the Sino – Tibetan
language family, which contains
Mandarin.

• China has over 160 cities with a
population of over one million, including
the seven megacities:
• Chongqing • Tianjin
• Shanghai • Shenzhen
• Beijing • Wuhan
• Guangzhou

• The government of China officially
espouses state atheism, and has
conducted antireligious campaigns to this
end.
• Religious affairs in the country are overseen
by the State Administration for Religious
Affairs. Although freedom of religion is
guaranteed, unapproved organizations can
be subject to state persecution.

• China was known to have a “one-child”
policy. However, for the 36 years that it
existed, (1979 – 2015), about half of all
Chinese parents were allowed a second
child.
• China has one of the oldest sporting
cultures in the world. Archery, swordplay,
and cuju all date back to China’s early
dynasties.
