Introduction

 Construction is one of the oldest industries, thus it is

claimed that it has had a minor increase in
productivity.
 The Performance needs to be improved if it so to
survive from global competition and increase
customer expectation.
Introduction

 The construction industry can benefit by learning

from advanced manufacturing techniques .
 The idea of using these benefits leads to radical
improvement of production and quality.

Conclusion
Problem Statement
 Productivity & profit in construction industry is low.
 Quality control is weaker in construction than
manufacturing.
 IBS is faced by many obstacles in Malaysia
Objective
 Verify that construction can learn from
manufacturing through IBS.

 Study the application of IBS and the

problems it is facing in Malaysia.
Types of Production
1- Craft production
Construction
2- Mass production
Manufacturing
3- Lean production

Definition of IBS
Industrialized Building System (IBS):

Building System in which structural components are

manufactured in factory, on or off site, transported
and assembled into a structure with minimal
additional site work.
Classification of IBS

IBS in Malaysia is divided into five groups.

 Pre-cast concrete framing
 Steel formwork system
 Steel framing system
 Timber framing system
 Block work system
Benefits of IBS

 Faster construction
 High quality and value of products

 Saving manual labor onsite

 Lower total construction costs

 Cleaner and safer construction sites

Advantage/Disadvantage
Conclusion
 Construction will benefit by learning from the
successes of manufacturing industry.
 IBS have many similarities to manufacturing:
Standardization. CAD/CAM
Repetitiveness. JIT
Production principle. Automation
 Benefit of IBS: Q
 Cost.
 Quality .
 Labor saving .
 Faster Construction.

C
 Safe, tidier, cleaner site.
T
 Obstacles (Problems) facing IBS in Malaysia:
 Instability of the market.
 Social & public acceptance.
 Leakage , tolerance , and tech.
 Rigidity with respect to change.
