Angles & Their
Measures

Pre Calculus
Sunday, April 7, 2019
1. Student will convert angle measures
(DD, DMS, radians or degrees), and
identify coterminal angles in order to
understand the unit circle and
trigonometry.
2. Student will use given angle measures
in order to find the length of an arc,
linear and angular velocities and the
area of a sector.

Angles
What is an angle?

Angles are named using lowercase Greek

letters such as , , , and .

Coterminal Angles
Coterminal angles are
angles in standard
position that have a
common terminal side.

For example 30°, –

330° and 390° are all
coterminal.

Quadrantal Angle
An angle with terminal
side on the x-axis or
y-axis.

That is, the angles 0°,

90°, 180°, 270°,
360°, 450°, ... as well
as –90°, –180°, –270°,
–360°, ...

Angle Measures
Angles are measured in degrees and
radians.

Degrees (0)
1 counterclockwise revolution = 3600
10 = 1/360 revolution
900 = 1/4 revolution (Right angle)
1800 = 1/2 revolution (Straight angle)

Angle Measures
Central Angle
A positive angle whose vertex
is at the center of a circle,
and whose sides pass through
a pair of points on the circle,
thereby subtending an arc
between those two points
whose angle is (by definition)
equal to the central angle
itself.

the central angle itself.

If the length of the radius of the

circle and the length of the arc
subtended are equal, then the
measure of the central angle is 1
radian. Pre Calculus
