2. apply mathematical induction in proving identities
3. solve problems using mathematical induction
Mathematical Induction
1=1
1+3=4
1+3+5=9
1 + 3 + 5 + 7 = 16
1 + 3 + 5 + 7 + 9 = 25
1 + 3 + … + (2n – 1) = n2
Principle of Mathematical Induction
1. P1 is true, and
2. for any k ∈ N, if Pk is true, then Pk+1 is also true,
then Pn is true for all n ∈ N
Prove that for any positive integer n,
1 + 3 + … + (2n – 1) = n2
1. Pm is true, and
2. for any k ≥ m, if Pk is true, then Pk+1 is also true,
then Pn is true for all positive integers n ≥ m
Prove that 2n < n! for all positive integers n ≥ 4.
