7E’s in LESSON PLANNING:

Work
Topic/Title: Work

Grade Level: Grade 8

Time Allotment: 60 minutes

Learning Competencies and Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1. identify situations in which work is done and in
which no work is done;
2. describe how work is related to power and energy;
3. differentiate potential and kinetic energy;
ELICIT ‘Get the students’ mind focused on the topic’

Ask the students what’s the first thing that comes into
their mind when they hear the word “WORK”. Show a
video clip about work done on a ball. What can a moving
ball do? Is there work done on a ball?
ENGAGE (8min.) ‘Get the students’ mind focused on the
topic’
Show the students illustrations to analyze if the situation
represents examples of work. They should be able to identify
the one doing the work and on which object the work is done.
They should also look into the direction of the force exerted
relative to the movement of the object or the distance
covered.
EXPLORE: ‘Provide students with a common experience’
PROBLEM SET and BRAINSTORMING
Divide the class into groups. They will be given the equation
to compute for work:

Each group will have to calculate the amount of work for each
of the given illustrations during the start of the activity.
These illustrations are given values on force and distance
covered.
EXPLAIN (15 min.) ‘Teach the concept’
Let the students present their answers. Clarify to the students that work
is a method of transferring energy. It is energy and not force that is
transferred when work is done. Show or demonstrate a billiard game
wherein one ball hits another ball. Talk about Kinetic and Potential
Energy. Emphasize that the energy of an object enables it to do work. A
moving object has KE while an object above a specified level has energy
due to its position called PE. Power is the rate of doing work or the rate of
using energy. Board work activity will follow.

1. A 1000 kg car has a velocity of 17 m/s. What is the car’s kinetic energy?
(Kinetic Energy)

2. If the same 1.0 kg book is lifted 0.5 m above the table, but the table top
is 1.0 m above the floor, what would be the potential energy of the book if
the reference level were the floor? (Potential Energy)
ELABORATE (5 min.) ‘Students apply the information
learned in the explain’
Divide the students into 5 groups. Each group will be given
a work sheet. They will then be assigned to a specific area
where they will spend energy in climbing a flight of stairs.
The group shall be able to calculate the amount of energy
expended and the power.

The students will be able to relate the concept of work,

power and energy through this activity.
EXTEND (5 min.) ‘How will you know that the students have learned the
concept?’

An enrichment activity will be handed to the students.

EVALUATE (5 min.) ‘How will you know that the students have learned the
concept?
Students will answer a written test.
