INTRODUCTION
•A train crash or accident is a type of disaster
involving one or more trains.
•It often occur as a result of
miscommunication, as when a moving train
meets another train on the same track; or
an accident, such as when a train wheel
jumps off a track in a derailment.
•12% of all the railway accidents across the
world happened in India in last years.

Who is to blame for increasing accidents?
•Among railway departments, the
Engineering (Civil) department had the
highest share of responsibility for
accidents in the last five years.

•44% of derailments between 2012-13

and 2016-17 were due to failure of
tracks, fittings.
• Number of train accidents due to derailments has
increased in the last five years even as total number of
accidents has declined.

• Casualties per train accident was the highest in 2016-17
in the last five years.

• Failure of railway staff accounted for the highest share
of accidents between 2012-13 and 2016-17.
Safety measures-
Measures to avoid collisions-
• To increase Efficiency and to enhance Safety in train
operations, Advanced Signaling System with along with Multi
Aspect Color Light Signals have been progressively provided
at about 85% of Broad Gauge stations of Indian Railways,
replacing outdated Multi Cabin Mechanical Signaling system
involving a large number of human interfaces.
Measures to avoid collisions-
• Train Protection and Warning System (TPWS):
TPWS prevents train accidents caused by human error like Signal
Passing at Danger and Over Speeding.
Measures to avoid collisions-
• Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS)-
TCAS has dual capability of preventing train accidents caused due to
Signal Passing at Danger or non observance of speed restrictions by
train drivers as well as preventing train collisions.
Measures to avoid collisions-
• Train Management System (TMS)-
TMS helps in real-time monitoring of trains in the control room.
Measures to avoid collisions-
• Complete Track Circuiting-
Measures to Reduce Derailments
• Upgradation of Track Structure.

• Long Welded Rails.

• Ultrasonic Testing of Rails and Welds .
